I'm learning about SEO and best practices to incorporate in some small local business websites I'm working on. The websites are simple, static and contain the traditional "home, about, services, contact" pages.
We like to use modal boxes to improve click-through (am I using that right?) on the website and therefore improve our ranking. In our case, we use the modal boxes to hide additional, mostly text information about the business and the services they provide. The user will be able to reveal the modal by clicking on a button/tab/etc. and the modals aren't in anyway obtrusive to the user experience since they are opt-in additional blurbs of information which can easily be clicked out of.
Is this considered A-Okay by the Googlebot? Will they still be able to see that information? I've seen people suggesting to instead position the text off screen since hiding with "display: none;" will hide the content from the crawlers, but I've read that positioning text off screen may also score some negative points because it may seem like you're trying to jam in some extra content and buzz words. Should I submit a site-map for a small static site like this?
All opinions and advice is greatly appreciated.
