I must humbly admit that I'm a long time wantrepreneur and infamous lurker. This is a tale of how I almost escaped the dreaded want-zone.
A little back story, I got a DUI back in July of 2016 and got sentenced to do a 3 month long DUI program among other things. The class was pretty much just a bunch of dudes and the occasional female sitting in a circle talking about how to commit crimes lead by a 'counselor.'
One of the guys at these meetings owned a Private Investigator business and was a former police officer. I come to find that running the business and being an officer was a conflict of interest and as such he was given an ultimatum. Cops make 100k a year and have crazy benefits where I'm from so the fact that he chose his business made me assume it was doing fairly well. At my last class he had given me his business card and it had a url on it.
I had been learning web development for a few weeks at the time and curiously decided to see what this guys site looked like. It was made using godaddys website builder and had terrible formatting and an ugly color scheme. I was confident I could improve his website and decided I was going to send him an email. I was filled with sheer excitement and fear! I had no idea what I would even say but I fell back on some insights I could recall from "How To Win Friends And Influence People"
Here's what I sent: 'I'm [IDIOT_POSTING_THIS], the dude you met at the DUI program. I was looking over your website and I think I can help you out.
Your website is the very first thing a potential client will see about your company. You may be the best private investigator in the area, but if your website can not entice a visitor to call you, you will never have the opportunity to work with them.
An effective website design helps visitors learn about your agency, the services you offer, your brand, and your agency’s value proposition.
I've been developing/programming websites for a couple years now so I was thinking I could work on your website so it will be responsive on mobile while being aesthetically professional and modern. I've been following niche site development and eCommerce business building on the side for the last few months and want to finally make the jump and get started myself. I'm a back-end web developer for a B2B SaaS company by trade and I've been saving money on the side for the last year and a half. I want to put roughly 10k of my savings into this, but I don't want to spend it willy nilly. From my reading, I've picked up the basics of SEO, monetization strategies, link building, and other aspects of the business. However, I'm fully aware that reading strategies and employing them are completely different and I'm bound to screw up on certain things.
Knowing that I will make plenty of mistakes along the way, what's the smartest way to invest my money? Should I buy a semi-established site on Flippa for 4-7k and invest the rest into outsourcing media/content creation? Or should I start from scratch and find a niche or two in a promising market, investing the 10k solely in content development? Or is the best option some combination of both: buying an established site while starting 2-3 smaller niche-sites on the side and dividing effort into each until I find which option is most profitable/enjoyable?
The type of businesses that interest me the most are authority sites that use light affiliate marketing and have a side product, such as an eBook or online course, to promote or sell. I'm not as much interested in strictly eCommerce sites because I don't want to have to worry about inventory and shipping logistics.
Any tips or advice is appreciated. I'm also open to finding a mentor who has more experience in this area. My dream is to eventually create a passive income stream that I can live off of, but for now I just want to generate some side income.

I help a friend manage a laser hair removal business. She's looking for a new space since the current salon she is renting a room from isn't really working for her (scheduling issues). BACKGROUND: My Fiance and I have a site called thefreshmommy.com - The site is meant to inspire Women to find the balance between being Super Mommys, and staying stylish, and inspired. My background is in Creative Direction/Design/Marketing and hers is in make up/styling, and retail management. We are self-financing this project and doing absolutely everything we can ourselves because we are on such a tight budget.
Every day I study SEO on here, and by searching/reading resources online. I have an ok understanding from my background in web design, but I also know that SEO is an everchaging complex animal that isn't a switch you just turn on. I have an immense respect for what the pros do.

I have been looking for an idea to get my foot in the door and get some experience starting a business.
Recently I have been approached by various people asking me if I could teach them how to use a Computer. These are middle-aged individuals who simply want to learn how to browse their web, check their email, install apps, and other general computer skill.
I found few businesses in my area that seem to cater to this segment. I found plenty Coding Tutors, Data Science Tutors, etc, but I found no business offering this kind of service for adults who are computer illiterate.
Moreover, that is just addressing the English speaking population, if couldn't find anything for them then certainly no one is addressing the Spanish Speaking market. I am in SoCal so there is no shortage of Latinos.
So my question, considering what service I'm offering and the market I'm targeting, is there any advice or resources you can recommend? Any help is greatly appreciated.
What I have in mind for now, is to canvass and try to validate my idea that way.

The company I work for is headquartered in Europe and has an office the united states. They have setup a different website in the US by using a CCTLD, sportradar.us as compared to the european sportradar.com.
My question is that when you search the brand name in google, both sportradar.com and sportradar.us appear. And because of this, a good chunk of traffic clicks sportradar.com and it ruins the organic traffic for sportradar.us. How do I recommend a change to our IT department to right this?

Hi everyone, I've generated some buzz with a few of my past posts on the /r/startups, /r/entrepreneur, and /r/marketing subreddits so I figured I'd write something else useful that you all might appreciate. I'm huge on content production and content marketing strategies so I want to provide a simple case study of a piece of content I produced earlier this week.
It's probably not the most interesting piece of content, but I'll highlight the relevant points and reasons why I structured the content the way I did. In the first 3 days, this piece of content has already ranked on the first page of Google for some long-tail keywords and has generated some traffic. For only being 3 days old, that's not bad at all and I expect this piece of content to rank in the top 3 for a wide-variety of search terms.
The bolded text is blog content so you can disregard reading it if you don't care to read about why there are more bugs during summertime and how to get rid of them! Full blog post here for those who are interested.

So this is the title of this piece of content. the main things I'm trying to rank for are "why are there more bugs during the summer" and "free ways to get rid of bugs". With ranking long-tailed terms like this, it will give a lot of variety and I might rank for similar long-tailed terms. If you search "Why are there more bugs during the summer" this blog is actually on the first page already. Additionally, if you search "free ways to get rid of bugs", you might not see this on the first page, but this blog is already ranked #4 in the past year for that search term. I anticipate it will rise pretty quickly. The last thing to note is the number in the title. I've noticed higher clickthrough rates with numbers in my titles and think they are eye catching to a reader.

I made this a header and included some of these terms in the title as well since I want them to rank. As stated earlier, this blog is already #4 in the past year for the term, "free ways to get rid of bugs"
1. Mow your lawn. It sounds simple, but it actually does work! Bugs love the heat, but they don’t want to sit out in the sun and roast. Keeping your grass mowed to prevent bugs from having access to a safe haven from the sun. I started a list here. Lists give your content variety and readers love them. Readers love them and stay on your page longer which looks good to search engines! Search engines like lists in general so implement them when you can!
2. Clean up spills and fallen fruit. Bugs love anything that provides them sugar. A small amount of sugar can provide bugs enough food and energy to last them for weeks. If you have a sugary spill on the inside or outside of your home, clean it up before it attracts bugs. The same goes for fallen fruit. Fallen fruit rots when it disconnects from the tree which means it naturally breaks open and decomposes. Bugs will be all over that piece of fruit as soon as they can access the contents on the inside. Info for the list...nothing too important here

Pros: I'm learning to code for web development, so PHP would be another programming language in my arsenal for freelance.
Cons: One problem I'm noticing is the influx of blogs in this niche versus the audience that is looking to use Wordpress sites. Second, almost all blogs I've researched literally regurgitate the same content with 10~20k words. To name a few: Colorlib & codeinwp, etc. I can't think of any way to.... not do that and be special since it seems to be working.

Basically, relationship advice blog. I hate to admit it, I occasionally read thought catalog. It's where this idea came from. People have problems, people post great advice; it is simple, beautiful, and helpful. I wanted to create a blog that had content focused on that main premise. It can be funny, serious, whatever. idk. it's an idea.
Pros: Potential to turn into YouTube channel (AskTheFeels is a great example), maybe a podcast with new people I can be friends with, create a bigger community around overall relationship advice, send people towards Reddit, give more helpful advice, etc.
Cons: Not too sure if posting Reddit content consistently (every week) on another site is "okay." Can I even monetize this without using the time to gather a huge following? But that's like every blog. You might be wondering why it's named Terrible_Advice... I'm like 20 yrs old w/ two relationships under my belt, a nonexistent family, and other terrible qualifications on my resume. Taking advice from me is terrible.

I think my main problem is the lack of images of the actual pieces. For my shop page, I am only using 3D renders of the products I designed. I simply don't have enough capital to make every design out of a precious metal to take pictures. I am very confident in my ability to make the pieces, as the prototypes were very successful.

I am bipolar afflicted.
I tell you this because I've had this "project" that has manifested itself into my psyche since the onset of the illness. In my delusions of grandeur of I imagined that I was meant to unite the world in a feat of mass cooperation.
I'm back to normal now, or as normal as I CAN be. I'm stable on meds but I still really have this compulsion to work on my project. It's all I think about. It's all that I want out of life. To start my own project organization.
He says it doesn't make sense. I tried to explain it to him and he shot me down at every turn.
I had told him (my new boyfriend) that I was crazy... he didn't see why until NOW when I told him about this thing of mine.
Before, when I posited to my father that I was in a good mental state again, he said "No you're not." and I knew he was talking about my work.
So yeah... It's been about 5 years since I first got the inkling to take this on. The first version of it was known by me as "UpdateGov," because I thought if we were ever going to solve these complex societal problems, we were going to need to get hooked up over the internet. I thought you should be able to "follow" your representatives to see where their focus is at a given time.
Then after a short time, I realized that wasn't going to work out. The government is too slow.
The solution needed to be private sector.
So I went to town thinking of this website that would allow people to work on solving those problems together, without the governmental focus.
I ultimately figured that people need:
I imagine a world where we have a HUB for working on these problems, and we dispatch people to complete these tasks and projects that help bring about more optimal outcomes for the future.
It's just people working on problems together.
I guess that's sooo unreasonable, though.
I just don't know if I should listen to him and give up.
I know I had a rough start, and that it wouldn't be easy... but to me it's worth it because I'm a believe in climate change and I think we need to be doing a lot more to address it. That's why I want to build this change catalyst movement.
I don't know what to do, though. I've been spinning my wheels.

Most brands running giveaways set up their rules to be something like: follow us, like this pic, tag 2 friends. While that works well enough, it limits the potential spread for no reason at all.
Part 1 of this trick - A while back I realized that the "tag 2 friends" part really makes no sense. We started experimenting with "tag unlimited friends" instead. Each tag was another entry, 1 tag = 1 entry, 10 tags = 10 entries. This allows more overall people to be tagged into your ecosystem, and it doesn't cost you anything more to do this. More people tagged, same prize(s).
Part 2 - The above had already proven to work waaaay better than the typical "tag 2 friends" rules, but I had another idea to boost it even farther. We tried it on our recent giveaway and it brought in 845 comments! Crazy. The idea was adding this to the rules: If it hit 500 comments, the prizes would 5X. Meaning, 5 winners instead of 1.
So now, entrants could have as many entries as they wanted to tag, AND also had an incentive to 5X their chances if the overall pool grew past 500 comments.
845 comments absolutely blew away previous engagement, which was already way higher with only the first trick we had discovered.
The point of running a giveaway is to boost awareness, so spreading it farther is a clear win. These ideas have gotten us insanely more engaged giveaways, so that's great.
Don't be afraid to try new ideas when everyone else is doing the exact same thing!

Solving the Fantasy Football Credibility Crisis
Disclaimer: I am not trying to reinvent DraftKings or established fantasy football leagues like ESPN and Yahoo.
First time poster. I am a two years out of a 4 year business school in the US and have background in sales and digital marketing. In the past I have done mobile auto detailing, custom signs/banners, and a mobile app design that won some awards but ultimately was not built.
Assets: No business debt, initial business plan, domains, no infringing patents, and design mockups of site features.
Problems: I do not have a technical co founder. This is problematic in identifying requirements (time,team,cost)for building out a working minimum viable product. This lack of team also limits any ability to get access to accelerators/incubators or angels (my experience).
I can program HTML and CSS. I have researched how other fantasy football sites operate and there are 3rd party APIs for actually scoring in season. But for the time being I am trying to get this made and in the hands of investors and people for feedback...I have looked into coding bootcamps but even after the investment I am not 100% certain that I would be able to create my site.
In summary, where have non technical entrepreneurs found technical founders and early team members? *Didn't feel the need to get into product specifics apologies if that is not the norm.

Many nonprofits might have a great story, elevator speech, PDF or business card, but the problem with a lot of those assets is that they don’t build emotion.
What’s compelling about HHA, as you can tell from the video is the people aspect and the love that Bill and Debbie have for the kids.
I know for "regular" or "boring" businesses you probably can't do this.
But I thought this was really cool for those of us in this sub that have businesses that have some kind of social, societal benefit aspect to it.
Anyone here had a video like this made? Or used a video as a "calling card" like this? How much did it cost to make? Did it work? Would love to hear more stories like this.
I still notice some websites have a News theme in addition to operating a Blog. Often they simply copy and paste an article from authoritative sources verbatim including all attributions, etc. Some link back to the original. Some don't. Sites could be general like Bloomberg News or Forbes, etc. and they might be specific such as an HVAC trade publication, etc.
Back in the days when RSS etc. was more popular I thought this had value. But what good does it serve, especially if Googlebot can quickly determine it is an exact copy? For what it's worth, with my personal clients I always create an "interpretative" news post that links back. So what is on their site is keyword rich, but is in their own words (mine) and enhances knowledge authority. Merging the information of a few pieces on the topic helps, too. But the text is organic and not just a copy/paste.
But I was just curious why in 2017 some people are still just copying over articles to their own pages like that.
Hi Guys, let me start off by saying that this has been one of the most helpful subreddits I have come across. I have not posted here before until now mainly due to a situation I am facing.
Long story short I have a private label product that has been selling for months, as a matter of fact this niche has seen a few other sellers on the same product for over a year now. All of a sudden I receive a notification that this product is infringing on a certain patent. I immediately look up the information to validate the legitimacy and it is indeed registered with the US patent office.
Is this a legitimate claim? This product has been offered and directly manufactured in China and this individual decides to take the existing item, patent it in the last 6 months and make it his own to demand licensing fees.
He's the kicker, he just launched his own store on Amazon and does not even sell the product.
I am seeking advice from all the Pros out there in dealing with this.

So I have this news website, but I also post some posts that get updated with new content frequently, now the thing is, when something new comes by and we update the content, it will show to Google search the date of the post, let's say that I post something today (March 31) and I update the post with new content at April 3, how can I make it that the post shows up on Google as updated x minutes ago? I have tried to re-submit the link on Google Webmaster Tools and to re-crawl it but I don't think that that's good for the site because it is already indexed.
The thing is we are losing traffic because similiar websites update their posts and it shows up on Google that the thread has just been updated and they get first spot...

I find Google related search terms great for finding long tail search terms to rank for and also for coming up with ideas for blog articles, etc.

I have thousands of users on my site, the URL for each profile page is just a random user ID. nothing optimized with keywords. I was thinking to change the URL to something that has keywords in it. given that we're talking about thousands, even if i modify each that it'll be somewhat unique, I do think some will be close. do i risk being penalized by duplicate URLs? also will this even help with SEO? each profile page independently doesnt necessarily get massive traffic. And if i were to go ahead with that. is there an effective way to just refer the generic URL to the keyword url and still get the SEO credit for it?

I currently own a small online clothing company like half the 20 something year olds here. It's profitable but doesn't bring in much more than gas money. So my newest idea is to create online courses for college credit exams like the CLEP and DSST. I'd charge a small price at like $25 and guarantee a refund if you fail the college credit exam. Most colleges accept both exams for credit. This would substantially cut down the stupid high costs for a college student. I'm currently pursuing a a BS in Geography and I want to teach in public schools and one day college. I've taken a lot of online courses so I'm familiar with some good methods of implementing them. I'd design courses I'm pretty confident I could teach like Cultural Geography and find others to teach in fields I can't. I figure even if I don't make a dime off this it will be great experience and something to put on a resume.

My coworker made this, and I died laughing when I read it.
Hi r/SEO Just started a website separate from my shop (really want separation from a company standpoint) retailing electricals and I have not got the first clue with SEO. I'm using prestashop if that helps but in a nutshell I don't understand keywords (I thought this was an individual word but am starting to think it's a phrase like 'satin finish plug sockets'), how to go about ranking or deciding what a shopper might use as a search term. I am a developer but in a corporate setting so no SEO required as it's B2B that I did so tech side I'm ok with it's just the SEO itself I require help with. Videos seemed geared up towards people with basic understanding which I don't have. Any links or advice for a complete novice with no real spare cash for professionals until sales start a coming?

I want to try out dropshipping for vehicle used parts, but I got the product dilemma because there're many cars, many parts, many accessories, etc. And I want to do a good research to find which products are the most sold - basic marketing; but because they're parts, I can't go to eBay, Amazon, Aliexpress or Google trends/planner to find out which one is the best, because they're just too many, there's no established source to find that out and I need a more efficient method of doing it.

One of my websites is an association, it's managed by a group of about 20 individuals that provide input on the website, direction of the company and publications.
We have a Facebook business page and would like to join/create some facebook groups with our business page. It doesn't seem like Facebook allows this, is there a workaround?
I'm going to be handling the social media aspect of the website and I want to keep my work on the social media portion of the website separate from my personal Facebook account. I don't want people from the groups being able to see my personal info, I want them to see the business page's info.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do? Any way to join a Facebook group as a business page? Should I create a personal account for the business so that we can accept friend requests and join groups?

I own about 20 different domains in the format of CitySoftwareName.com (eg DallasMailchimp.com), CityServiceName.com (eg DallasEmailCampaigns.com), CityCategoryName.com (eg DallasEmailMarketing.com) and I'm not exactly sure how to use them.
Most of my traffic comes to my corporate type site with a blog which we keep adding fresh content to and drive paid traffic to.
If I wanted to get benefit from these domains, what does that look like?
Would a single page site get listed organically (page contains an offer or call to action)? Would I need to create a small blog with a few posts? Would I have to keep updating content? If my hosting is on my own virtual server, can I put all these domains on that sam server? If I linked all these domains/sites back to my corporate site/blog, would I get hurt or penalized in any way?
FYI - the domains above are sample domains, my domains do not pertain to marketing or SEO.

I work in the plant hire industry and have looked after specialist plant for the last 7 years.
My website idea is first and foremost to help people. Other hire companies and end users / customers.
There are many different manufacturers and not all hire companies will stock every manufacturer or model. My website is (hopefully) going to suggest the perfect machine for their specific task! None biased advice on which machine would be right for them.
Most hire companies will recommend a machine they run which may not do the job as well as a product they don't. I hope to eradicate that.
Obviously I work within this industry so occasionally I may be recommending a product the company I work for doesn't run so how can I profiteer from helping people ? As I'm only suggesting the perfect machine but not pointing them to the company that runs it should I look at making money from advertising / affiliating ?
Any advice on how to approach this ? Should I wait till the site starts getting more and more hits before approaching hire companies ?

I'm a consultant within a niche. My official role & responsibility in most companies is either business developer or software developer. I go in, solve a problem & leave. That works out and it's very formal. With my cornerstone client, I'm called a 'consultant' but in reality I'm the company's integrator. I determine projects, get people to collaborate, teach, delegate, manage & mentor. We've worked together for years & at this point I'm confident I've made him millions. We've had a very informal but successful relationship.
A few months ago my fee increased. He agreed but was unhappy. The ROI is still undeniable, but he thinks the service should cost less. This has switched our relationship from 'come in and fix everything' to a more piecemeal approach. Now I have to find a way to make that workable (if possible). For instance he e-mailed me out of nowhere saying that someone needs help & it's urgent. If I'm available, I'm happy to do the work. When I'm not it erupts into this drama of "not being there for him"... So at a minimum, I would have to convey boundaries & express that if I'm not around, I can't fix issues on a deadline that needs to be met before I've even checked my e-mail.
So assuming you had a highly successful & highly emotional client who just decided to go cheap. Is there a way to work with them? Do I walk away? Do I let him tire himself out?

I've been seeing more of these in my Facebook News Feed and I'm curious as to what they charge. I'm not necessarily looking to use one of these services but I'd like to get an idea of what they charge. I clicked one of the ads but they try to force a call to get more information and I'd rather not give up my number and BS my way through a call to find out pricing if I can avoid it.
Is there a website I can use where I can read through and select different line items for general terms and conditions and then have it compile it all into one document?

I see a lot of you want to effectively use Facebook Advertising.
While it's not rocket science, but for some FB pixel implementation might not be that intuitive. Especially setting up the event code and eCommerce events for dynamic ads is a little tricky. And doing it with a tag manager is a little complex for most, I admit.
