So most of the startups or side-hustles I see in this sub seem to be based around Amazon or eBay in some way, or dropshipping from AliExpress. Thing is, being in Norway, there isn't really the opportunity for things like that, Amazon and eBay haven't taken off here at all because of massive import taxes, and AliExpress has the same problem.

So I'm curious, is there anyone from Norway in here who's started their own successful company?

Potentially a unique situation but on my website I have 2 numbers side by side. Format being Contact Info: "Number A" or "Number B" in the footer. I do this because "Number A" is often busy and I do not want to lose customers so I provide an alternative.

My question is will this affect seo even if my NAP is consistent across all other citations? Is schema necessary here or will google just pick up on the first number. And is this format confusing/spammy to google thus affecting my serps? Thanks

Hi, so my competitor's site went offline and is currently a 404. I have submitted the URL to Google for a crawl, and clicked on the result, had it not load, and bounced back to the results a few times.

I'm trying to make sure Google realizes the site is gone.

Ideally their site tanks* and gets off the first page, but I want to make sure I'm doing everything possible to get the info to Google that the site is offline.

*It's not a business website, so they aren't losing money, but I'd like to see them off the first page.

I've done some searching on wordpress.org and it's a tough list to muddle through without trying every single one individually, and all the google searches seem to be just paid-for reviews...so I thought maybe you all might have some suggestions for me.

The functionality I'm looking for:

Add an easy sign up method Present a not-too-obtrusive pop-up to encourage signing up for regular updates Offer a download in exchange for an email address Require a confirmation of the email address input in order to receive the download Easily send out newsletters Any other functionality that can help me grow my subscribers list. Taking my Business to the Next Level - Critique my website - x-post from r/smallbusiness entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Bare with me - I have a lot to say but sometimes I have a hard time organizing my thoughts, wall of text may be incoming.

First off, I'm 20 years old electrical engineering student and currently run a small service/ecommerce business. The purpose of this post is looking for feedback and help taking my business to the next level. I have a couple ideas that I will touch on later. (www.SouthernCurbside.com - my site)

My small business does local mailbox repairs and restorations (cast aluminum mailboxes). It has been fairly successful (especially before winter came around) given the fact that it is not scalable, meaning I do one mailbox service and then their mailbox is fine for years to come (there is no repeat customers if that makes any sense). When the winter came around, it was too cold to paint and work, so I began brainstorming a way to make additional income and I saw an oppurtunity. People always came to me asking if I sold mailboxes, some of the big name mailbox companies refused to work with me on giving me distributor pricing for their mailboxes (I could not make any money selling at retail price) since they had a vendor in the area already (the business is terrible and does not have any business).

Im going to sidetrack for a minute. Most of the middle class neighborhoods in my area of the country all have cast already mailboxes that are powder coated, the paint fades quickly and people want them restored (I also paint other varioues exterior things). Their door hinges wear out and they need new brass address numbers. The big player in the industry is imperial mailboxes and they pretty much have their mailboxes in every neighborhood. These are the ones I am working on.

Back on track. Since people were asking me if I sold mailboxes, I decided over the winter to find a supplier for my own cast aluminum mailboxes to sell. I did, but unlike most dropshipping websites my product is amazing and I have a really good relationship with my manufacturer/foundry. (family owned and U.S.A. foundry). Since launching, I have made one sale on amazon and one sale locally. My margins are about 20-30 percent depending on the platform. One advantage that my product has over the competition is that is semi-gloss enamel coated and I am a good bit less expensive than the others.

Now that the background is out of the way I want to talk about marketing and my website. I ran a facebook test ad for a day and a half ($5 a day budget)(i know shouldve ran it longer) towards my potential target audience - i had 112 post enagements (boosted post) with a 6 cent cost per engagement. I did not even get one add to cart. I think a reason beacuse of this is due to the facebook automatically running the ad on instagram, which I think is not the most optimal place for my type of product. I think the reason I sold a box on amazon so easily is that it is a trusted site with tons of traffic. I would love any feedback on the best way to market. I think one of the biggest obstacles is that my product is expensive - impulse buys are not really common with an item over $200. What types of ads are going to be best for this type of product? Should I use constant sales? Is my website landing page not optimized enough? I tried to use a similar style to the successful online mailbox retailers (www.budgetmailboxes.com)

A couple of next level ideas I had: -Get in with a local garden and hardware store, talk to them about selling my product in their stores. -Get in with a home builder/contractor company. One of my close family friends develops a lot of the organized neighborhoods in my areas. I haven't got up the nuts to talk to him yet because I'm not sure if I am prepared yet. I think getting my mailbox massively installed in new neighborhoods is the best profitable way to get a huge customer base - when its in new neighborhoods, homeowners have to come to you for replacements parts ect. -sending a free sample mailbox to a home and garden blogger/influencer

I'm sure I've left out some kind of vital information but I'm just looking for some general guidance. I really believe this can be super successful due to my experience talking with homeowners and serviving the mailboxes myself for the past year. I could write a book on why I believe it can take off but i would be here a while.

Canadian company doing business in the US - Quick thoughts on this TLD question? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

We're a Canadian marketing company but plan on expanding down to the US (initially through warm leads but eventually through cold outreach, and on track to open a branch in Florida)

We can't get the .com for our URL because someone is squatting on it and wants an outrageous amount of money for it.

We have the following TDLs: CompanyName.ca CompanyNameInc.com CompanyName.net

Question: Given that we want to do the majority of our work with US clients (though keep some Canadian ones) is a .ca a bad move? Does it seem like spam to American's, especially via cold outreach?

We like how much cleaner .ca looks. I've searched how ccTDLs effects Google rankings and we're not too worried about it. The main issue is should we go with the longer URL that's a .com because .ca will look off to American small business owners? We figured .net was the most spammy looking of all?

How did you form your LLC - Single member? In home state? Registered agent? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I've read that single member LLCs don't protect you from lawsuits.

That most states view them no different than sole proprietors meaning your home/car/savings are fair game if someone sues your business.

How did everyone here setup their LLC?

How do I boost my teams morale? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

TLDR: I'm a part owner at this firm. Everyone is quitting and I'm trying to retain the staff I have currently.

I am a partner with a recruiting firm. There were two owners initially, they split ways about 4 months ago. Ever since then, the morale in the office has tanked. Two of my top performers have left in the past few weeks. I’m left with two top sales guys and about 6 other people. As of late, the office morale has been horrible. No one seems to be working. I understand that some people may need some time to adjust to the change, but it should be business as usual. I’ve been trying to do some research on different team building exercises we could and I still haven’t found anything that really jumps out at me. Currently we only work 38 hours a week, take Fridays off when we hit our goals and occasionally an employee appreciation day. I’ve suggested a team meeting without the owner and a few other things. Name of the product, price, number of reviews, ranking, etc. Also, what's the weight of each of this factors? How did you decide what idea you would pursue? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I know this is a vague question. Let me explain.

I have always wanted to start my own business, I have read countless entrepreneurial books, listen to podcasts and spend much of my waking time thinking about it.

The problem is I have no idea what my business would be. I am now 32 years old and have continued to climb the corporate ladder and work for the man. I have a wife and two kids that rely on me and it’s a “risky” time to start something on my own, however, I know as I get older there will be even more risk. I don’t want to look back when I’m 50 and beat myself up for not taking a step into the unknown.

I’m really ready to take this chance on myself, but I’m struggling to find something realistic I can get excited about. Has anyone else had a similar experience? How did you finally settle on your current business and how is it working out for you?

Befriending An Investor Ally: Social Engineering & The 'Mayonnaise Money' Story entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

This is the story of how I used my over-active analytical mind and cultivated sense of creatively to enrich the trust and friendship of a friend and potential ally—someone with a rich character, strong morals, and passionate hustle... who also happens to have immeasurably valuable experience and access to an abundance of intelligent capital.

Background

In early 2016, I was hired as a marketing consultant by a 25-year-old entrepreneur with two multi-million dollar exits under his belt and in the process of starting what appeared to be his third. His investment portfolio—as I later discovered—was equally impressive.

An entrepreneur myself—consulting as a means to fund my ventures—I was abundantly excited by the prospect of learning from him and eager to win him as a future ally.

Involved to varying degrees throughout, the project continued for a year before he made the hard/smart decision—based on the market landscape—to walk away.

Beyond the learnings he exemplified in regards to operations, pivots, and objectivity; I was captivated by his principals, leadership, and general character. He had been a mentor, a model, and a friend. I hoped to work, collaborate, or explore with him in the future.

Transition

Giving him time to mourn the death of his passion project, I maintained a light touch. Six months later, he texted me as a preface to an evite to his holiday party (yet another lesson in making widespread outreach feel personal). As expected, the party was a blast—attended by a spread of venture capitalists, prominent musicians, and strong founders.

Continually enamored by his principles and process, I implemented all that he'd given me. Still, I felt to be "outside the gates" and unable to convey proportionally appropriate gratitude.

One day—while thinking of a gift representative of my gratitude—I asked myself, "what do you get the guy who has (or is offered) everything?" I contemplated what he'd already given me (or what I'd taken from him) and was reminded of a story about a prank he'd pulled which—at this point—had become an aspirational piece of mythos with my founder friends.

Execution

The answer, I realized, was Gifted Perspective; the use of Creative Nonfiction to convey a vibrant illustration of my perception as an intangible element of gratitude.

I spent a few hours writing what had become known to my friends as "the Mayonnaise Money story" and hired an illustrator from Upwork to design a graphic representation of the concept. I published both to Masters of Irreverence; a Shopify store largely created to house my drunken ideas which leveraged Printful for on-demand printing and drop-shipping.

The "gift" was the storied encapsulated in the product description.

The Mayonnaise Money story gifted my perspective of him in an entertaining and sharable (to him) experience. Total cost, $40 in design and 3 hours of copywriting.

Delivery

I'd initially planned to send him one of the shirts with the link to the product included as a note, but—shortly after writing this—was at his house when the girl he was seeing at the time joked about me knowing a different side of him. I responded, "just ask about the mayonnaise" which prompted him to leave the room laughing.

Confused and cautiously curious, she asked asked for context. "Go ahead and tell her" he yelled from the kitchen, "you'll probably tell it better than I can." I smiled and said, "it's probably better if I read the published version." Concerned, he came back in the room.

I proceeded to read the story as theatrically as possible; watching as she went wide-eyed and he shook his head laughing. Finishing the narrative, I turned my phone to show the t-shirt attached to the product listing. Without pause he remarked, "Of Course You Did."

Some time later, while out for drinks with a similarly successful friend of his, he was reminded of the shirt and excitedly encouraged me to pull it up on my phone to share.

Of all the lessons he'd shared with me, I'd succeeded in creating an experience for him.

Lesson

As Dale Carnegie advises in 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' you should, "become genuinely interested in other people" and "give honest and sincere appreciation."

My addendum to that wisdom, leverage creative mediums unique to your strengths or relationship with them and make them feel that appreciation as viscerally as possible.

Social media content for a retro furnishings e-commerce store entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

About 2 months ago we launched an e-commerce store selling furnishings (everything from wall clocks to pillows to kitchen accessories such as mason jars) in a retro look. So lot's of emphasising on the 50's and 60's look as well as the typical american pin-up era. We're based in Sweden where this stuff is really popular.

One of the main struggles I have faced so far is to get some really valuable and fun content going on our social medias. Sofar I have basically only posted product images and tried to liven it up in the image description, as those are the only images we have access to right now. Looking to possibly set up some kind of small studio we could create something in, but that's in the next 5-6 months at least.

I just feel like it's so boring, and I know what type of content I would create if I had access to more time and possibilities - I'm thinking short videos in the Tasty format where a small room is decorated - or how-to videos such as adding the finishing touches to a room using X product. etc. But that's not really a possibility right now, so I would love to hear what kind of ideas anyone of you guys would have for a store like ours.

I'm 22 yo, started a design company not feeling secure. Need feedbacks & thoughts. entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

A little about myself, I have a diploma in interior design. About one and a half year of working experience in interior design & construction.

I was working freelance on my off days for my partner (before he was my partner) for awhile now. He does graphic design & he have a client base for interior design so he decided to offer me to be his partner. We split everything 50-50 including what he does in graphic designs. Currently most of the client will be from his side mainly because he has been doing this alone for awhile now while I am only 22yo so I do not have rich/mature social circles that needed to renovate house/office. Majority of the time I am relying on my partner side.

It was a no brainer that someone would share what they have build all their life and share it with somebody. It is not that I do not trust my partner, it is just that I try to be as cautious as possible. I do not have access to his previous business earnings but that is fair and made sense. He is near his retirement and dont plan to retire soon but I do not have the security when I rely on someone else.

Starting a business is always a risk but there is always so many 'what if'. We did pretty well for the first two months from zero capital to having a small 500sqft office & a 50% salary increase from my last company (well I'm being underpaid & as a fresh grad). After sparring all the profits on starting an office left us with 0 capital again. What if there is no business for the next 2-3 months? There is nothing on going at the moment. I have no experience in business as I do not know what are the highs and lows in sales. Are we able to make through this storm?

My partner is really optimistic and plans to buy house & a new car this year while I'll be happy if we're manage to survive till the end of this year. There is no going back in this, just want to hear some of your thoughts & feedbacks.

Question about Instagram paid partnerships and ads entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Sometimes influencers will make a post with a flair above it saying "paid partnership with X", or they will hashtag a post with #ad to show that it's paid advertisement for a business.

My question is: how does this actually benefit the company?

Isn't the whole point of using influencers to take advantage of the fact their followers are influenced by their opinions and decisions? If a post shows that it was paid, wouldn't that show the influencer does not have a genuine personal view of the product/service? It would easily be picked up by followers. Wouldn't it be better for the company to NOT show that the post was paid?

Absolutely dying for some direction on this one - My organisation is close to launching our first shopify store and a big part of our strategy is launching into a presales 'research' phase.

Let me be clear though, I'm talking preselling, not preorders. That is, all the preorder apps that replace product buy buttons with preorder buttons are not what I'm after.

I don't want sales, I don't want customers to put money down, I only want to research whether or not they try to, and what products they're trying to buy. I want them to hit, say, the checkout button, receive a message, and not be given an opportunity to put money down, I'd rather they instead leave their email.

Is there an existing app or something for this? Is there a better approach?

Honestly interested in hearing anything about shopify presales, case studies, anecdotes, whatever, I'd love to hear it.

Hi, just wondering what you all think of this product that I’m currently working on.

It’s a smart cctv camera that you can connect to your phone etc. However, what sets it apart from the competition is how it records.

The camera will have 3 separate cameras. One will be a 180 degree camera and the other two will be able to zoom in with optical zoom to get the best possible image of any motion that’s happening.

AI will be able to control how much zoom is used on each camera to ensure that all the motion is captured in the best possible quality. All footage is stored local (so there is no need to pay a monthly/yearly subscription fee to have saved to the cloud) unless you want the footage backed up to the cloud.

The app will give you a lot of control over the functionality for example, you will be able to set a time zone where there shouldn’t be any motion, and if there is, the camera will automatically take images of any faces and/or number plates that it sees

China marketing is a lot like investing in cryptocurrencies entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

When its good its fantastic. The data is easy to work with, conversions are through the roof and reach is huge. But once or twice a year huge hiccups happen that just flips everything upside down.

Last year our korean clients got hit big time with the whole THAAD debacle and consequently we lost a bunch of multi year contracts. It was sweet when it lasted.

This year, just yesterday to be exact there was another shakeup in the form of a government decree that banned advertisements and promotions on wechat. The whole ordeal turned my social media team into a dumpster fire. I dont know the extent of marketers affected but we got hit bad as we have a major client who asked us to do just this. We are currently talking with the wechat guys under the table (as are others). We cant lose this contract....

So yeah in terms of marketing its fantastic when its great but that day always comes when things get shaken up by a fickle government

  1. I searched Google for my title match website is not there in the first 300.
  2. Domain age close to 9 years. The website has been live since then, though I have actively started maintaining it from November of last year.
  3. The domain is an exact match for the title search.
  4. When I look for site:domainname.com I see result which is with https:// but my website is http:// and I don't plan to migrate to https://

This is what I have learned from charging 25K-50K+ upfront plus 10% rev share to setup people's Facebook ad campaigns.. entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

First off, charging more SAVES YOU MORE TIME! Your rate is your qualifier, if people know your rate or you immediately mention it at the beginning of a conversation as I now have learned to do, you avoid the "exploratory meetings" - people who talk to you know your time is valuable and respect it as so and only talk to you when they are ready for you.

Second, you AVOID SCARCITY MENTALITY and clients that don't know your worth nor the merits of investment. Which if you charge 10K or less for your services you'll encounter a lot of entrepreneurs that expect the world for such a limited budget. They aren't happy with making 50K for 10K, because they themselves are likely either over confident in their own ability or are still growing out of the "shiny object" syndrome where 10K spent is 10K lost towards something that "could've made them a million dollars". Where as my clients, myself, and many of you would gladly shell out 10K every day if it mean you'd be making a 50K return.

Third, you get A LOT more referrals! When you charge more and can deliver as I do, your clients will literally do your job of marketing for you in spreading the word. There are very few marketers that ACTUALLY GET RESULTS, and typically clients at that level know this or have experienced the growing pains of finding a good marketer so they appreciate you and show it in the form of referring their friends and others of caliber to you.

Fourth, because you charge more it typically means that your clients have both the money and understanding to hire the RIGHT person to get the job done, so you don't have to work with amateurs or excuses. Since I do a lot of advertising, I work a lot with video guys and influencers, I don't want my clients hiring the video guy who charges 1K because it tells me he likely doesn't have the best equipment for the job, and does not have the time nor is in the right frame of mind to focus on the task at hand because 1K does not pay the bills, and going the extra mile with us to get the job done right endangers his ability to pay his bills. It's easier to deal with other professionals, but I am not saying I don't hire the up and comers, because I am frugal and I love building others up, however I won't take on an unnecessary risk of missing a deadline or objective, if I in anyway believe that they are not the right fit for the job.

Fifth, your clients tend to be innovators and you are in a constant state of learning. As much as my clients learn from me, I learn from them. Some of my clients are truly changing the world, and it is an honor to help them accelerate that process. I also find that my clients at this level tend to become more friends than clients and I get to enjoy a lot unique life experiences and great conversation. Not just the normal conversation like "how's the weather" but conversation that makes you feel alive, like getting lost in talking about passions and how to help each other achieve each other's passions by connecting this person or that person or this resource or that resource or stumbling upon a game changing idea together that makes you feel like you're really alive. They also in many ways are masters of the work / life balance, something I find myself in need of mastering.

Sixth, the most obvious is that you make more money, but not necessarily in the most obvious ways. Yes, you are charging more, which by definition makes you more money, but I have found that you also get brought in to do more than whatever you were hired for, for that business. While most people initially hire me for Facebook ads, that is not all I do, like for instance I have made millions alone just from cart abandonment techniques I employ for my clients. So one contract quickly turns into 3-4, or in many cases you may ultimately just end up managing their entire marketing arm of their business.

Seventh, flexibility and freedom. This is hands down probably the most important out of all the different points above. Low budget clients can not afford to do research nor pursue the best possible ROI method. For instance, anyone who tells you Facebook ads is all you should be doing, should be punched in the face and kicked out the door. Every marketing medium works in tandem with the others, Search (Google / Bing / Yahoo) + Social (Facebook / Youtube / Pinterest / Twitter / Linkedin) are a match made in heaven, but did you know that you can increase your returns on all of those platforms and your SEO ranking from sending direct mail? Yes, the old and ugly antiquated direct mail, increases your brand recognition and people may see it and set it aside or throw it out but then remember you later and search patterns of the average person are to type in the company name instead of the domain which turns into a boost in organic traffic, more searches for your business, higher ranking. What about adding free samples to that direct mail or free samples via email to convert them into customers over the long game which takes 2-3 months? Small budget companies often can't do that at an effective or meaningful level. Larger budget companies mean more tools in your marketing arsenal, and less time spent arguing the importance of why they should be doing those things.

So it might sound crazy that at 25, I charge 25K-50K upfront or higher plus percentages for my time, and am going to be increasing it my minimums soon, but the reality is this. Outside consultants are more effective than in house marketing teams, regardless of the industry. Why?

Outside marketers, are bound by results. We are held at a higher standard, our roles strictly defined and accountable, and most of our business is via referral - reputation matters.

Many companies are beginning to or have already realized this, and so have the skilled marketers. Why work for someone for 100K, when you can land one 10K a month contract, or 2 5K a month contracts, and make 120K a year living anywhere in the world, working a few hours a week/month with an unlimited income cap? Want to earn more? Take on another contract. Boom - pay raise!

This is why company culture has become such an important topic as of late. It is hard to compete with the perk of unlimited upward potential, and retain your top talent unless you incentivize them in all the right ways ( money isn't the only way to motivate someone - DM me for ideas ).

So when you decide to take your business to the next level, ask yourselves, which is a better business decision?

Hiring an in-house salary employee with "years of experience" for 60K-100K, or hiring an outside consultant who's had to prove themselves in the market in order to justify their rate over time?

Many digital marketing, social media, & web dev agencies prey on entrepreneurs & startups...here are some tips to avoid getting burned on buying 3rd party marketing services. entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I'm an eCommerce growth consultant...basically I help coach eCommerce companies (including many startups) through early growth phases (its a mix of technical consulting, business coaching, digital marketing, design optimization, & biz dev ). While one part of my job is training clients on digital marketing/helping them run campaigns, I also help them analyze past campaigns, and when necessary source 3rd party marketing services I don't offer myself (for reasons I'll touch on below). Just wanted to post some things I tell all of my new clients as a PSA, since I see marketing professionals & ad sales people roping people into traps everywhere (including this sub). Eventually planning to turn this into a blog post, and I'm longwinded as is, so apologies for the length, but hopefully theres some helpful info.

Contents The first part of this post highlights the problem of digital marketing & technical agencies, as well as people in digital advertising sales taking advantage of many companies. The second half of this post will go over one of the most common ways people get burned. And the third part is some ways to protect yourself when sourcing marketing services.


The vast majority of my new clients all seem to have the same story. "I once hired a reputable, expensive digital marketing agency. I paid them thousands of dollars, and we barely had any results". Or "I paid COMPANY X to do an email blast for us. They said they usually get big numbers, but we only saw a few sales. Can you look at what they did and tell me what you think?". Or the most common, "I paid the company who made my website to run some Facebook & Adwords campaigns. I'm not entirely sure what they did, but it didn't really work"

When I audit the company's past efforts, I'm often shocked at how terrible the work of many 3rd party agencies is. Sometimes reputable, highly paid agencies. I see incorrectly configured campaigns. Completely wrong analytics implementations . Improper tagging. No targeting. No site optimizations. No testing. Wrong keyword targets. Wrong SEO. Really no thought or creativity or personalization at all. Just shoddy, half-assed "cookie cutter" campaigns running people to un-optimized websites.

A common part of my on-boarding process is breaking the news to clients that they're getting screwed by their SEO company...their adwords company...their email marketing company etc. Or telling them that the guy they've been paying to do their social media or blog writing who they were raving about, actually has no clue what they're doing. Or that their shiny new website they just paid a bunch of money to have built, is actually just a completely unoptimized generic template with a few words changed around...and they haven't been collecting correct analytics data for the last 6 months.

And these agencies get away with it too, rarely getting called out. Sometimes the client even ends the partnership thinking they did a good job. Other times they keep the agreement going indefinitely. Why? Because many entrepreneurs (and even many mature businesses) aren't savvy enough about any of it to know how hard they're getting boned.

They never fully understand if their marketing efforts were actually effective, or why. Many of them even believe their terrible marketing agency was doing a good job. They think the bad results is their own faults. Or that marketing channel just won't work for their business. And the agencies they hire don't do anything to teach them.

Over-promising & under-delivering has become the norm among technical agencies across all channels. And they've gotten really good at it.

The tactics are usually all pretty similar. They use technical terms you've never heard of. They show you the best examples from their portfolio. They publish blog posts and press releases that give them notoriety. They throw numbers at you that sound great, even though you don't really know what they mean. All to smokescreen the fact that they're selling you gold-painted shit.


The Metrics Diversion

There are many ways various marketing service providers hook clients and suck their money. But the most common trap I've seen startups fall into is what I call "The Metrics Diversion". Essentially, where a marketing provider will feed positive numbers that sound good, but don't actually matter for your goals, in order to make themselves appear more effective than they actually are.

Digital marketing is rooted in metrics & analytics. Its about using objective numbers to figure out whats working and whats not.

In the origins of web marketing, almost all companies & advertisers focused on the same set of metrics for analyzing the effectiveness of their efforts. In the early days, they looked mainly at stats like "views" and "clicks". They asked questions like Whats my "Click Through Rate?", whats my "Cost per Click", Whats my "View Rate"? How many "Unique Visitors" did we get? How many people viewed my video? How many people liked my page?

These were the days of "Spray and Pray" advertising. You may remember the wild west of obnoxious Pop Ups at every click. Banner Ads everywhere. Spam "domain parking" pages. Email inboxes flooded with shit (with minimal control from email providers). Search engine results pages filled with garbage sites with crap content. Basically, anything to try to "trick" as many users as possible into landing on their pages. And to a degree, it worked back then.

They didn't really dig into what those people were doing after they clicked an ad, or viewed a video, or read a blog post or email, or saw a pop up. They cared about getting the most amount of people to their sites for the least amount of money.

Aside from the fact that marketers simply didn't have the targeting & analytics capabilities we have today, the way people have used the internet was much different back then. The internet was new & exciting. Online competition within industries was at a minimum. Social media was in its infancy. People were more curious, less informed, & far more gullible. The same cookie-cutter approaches worked for pretty much any company.

But people have wised up, and so has the technology. Put frankly, people got sick of the shit they got bombarded with. They stopped clicking ads & started blocking them. They stopped opening spam emails. They pick and choose what content they see. They price shop and dig for reviews. They seek out quality content rather than just whatever is thrown at them.

New school marketing philosophy has adapted to these changes, and takes a different approach. Rather than just looking at "superficial" metrics like views & clicks, we now have the technology to really dig in to how users are actually responding to marketing across the entire sales funnel. And we can target exactly the right people who actually might want to see what we're offering. Marketers finally learned that the quantity of the visitors to a page, isn't nearly as important as the quality of the visitor, and the page they're landing on. And they learned that if they don't provide valuable content, someone else will.

So good marketers now focus on metrics like conversion rates, "Cost per conversion", time spent on page, bounce & exit rates, average video view times, Return on Ad Spend, Revenue per Customer, repeat customer rates etc. Its about answering questions like, How does this campaign fit the brand? How can I get this campaign in front of the right people while avoiding the wrong ones? How can I make my site more enjoyable for users? How much did that customer cost to acquire, and how do I get them to come back?

New school digital marketing is about creating highly targeted, highly relevant content that integrates seamlessly into the user's internet experience. Its about using data to test, analyze, and optimize every part of your company's online presence. Rather than trying to force content into a users face, or trick them into landing on a page, its focused on providing a rewarding experience they'll come to on their own.

The problem is, getting a person to your website or to click on an ad is easy. Getting the right person to your website, and convincing them to actually buy from you is difficult. New school marketing isn't easy. It requires a breadth of knowledge across many technical channels, a deep understanding of analytics (and how it integrates into technology), and the ability to fully customize a marketing mix for each client's needs. The cookie cutter approaches from years past don't produce results anymore.

But lucky for marketing agencies, most of their clients don't know the difference between new school and old school marketing. So they get away peddling the same shit from 15 years ago. They use the same "cookie cutter" marketing approaches whether they work or not. And they waive the easy-to-attain metrics in front of your face, while avoiding the ones that matter....so you don't know any better.

They'll send you reports that say, "We got you a 10% Click Through Rate, look how great we're doing", without telling you "Your conversion rate and return on ad spend are terrible". They'll say "Look at how many clicks we have on our adwords ads this month"…without mentioning they're targeting keywords that are driving people who don't actually want to buy from you.

Advertising sales people will try to sell you on an email marketing blast saying "We have an email list of over 1 million subscribers - a 20% open rate, and a 10% click rate", without telling you the actual conversion rates on those ads are terrible, and those percentages were based on the best campaign they've ever run, not averages..

I've seen it time and time again.

In the social media marketing world, this is rampant. I could write an entirely separate post on picking a social media agency or "person". Old school social media was focused on "follower counts", "page likes", "shares", etc. Companies still spend thousands trying to get more "likes" for their pages. But none of that means jack shit anymore (unless you're in the entertainment industry)…because social media algorithms will only let people see your content if you pay for it anyway.

I can't tell you the number of times I've heard "we want to focus on building up our page likes & followers we do anything else on Facebook or instagram". Then once they get some likes, they sit there wondering why their posts aren't getting any traction.

This isn't a problem isolated to entrepreneurs. Mature, multi-million dollar businesses fall into these traps too

Are all of these agencies doing this maliciously? Not necessarily. Many of them are just stuck in the past, and don't have the capabilities to do better. They're making money doing what they're doing, and don't have reason to change. Others don't even realize the numbers they're looking at don't mean what they think they mean.


As an entrepreneur, every dollar you spend counts. And you definitely don't want to waste time or money on ineffeffective marketing. This isn't an exhaustive list, and it varies depending on what sorts of services you're buying….but here are some general tips to avoid getting boned.

  1. Be Informed This is obvious. But really important. Don't take their word for it on anything, and make sure you understand everything a marketing company is pitching to you in depth. Don't treat your marketing & advertising as something you just hand off and forget about. Don't trust that they're performing well just because they say they are. Don't let yourself be fooled by big numbers that don't matter.

    You should shop around multiple agencies. Compare prices & deliverables. If the words they're using sound like gibberish, and they're not good at explaining it to you, find someone else who can. If they tell you your ads are performing well, but your gut is telling you that you're not seeing results, dig into it yourself. Don't be afraid to call them out on under performance, or hire a 3rd party consultant to audit their performance.

  2. Know your real goals, and avoid "The Metrics Diversion". This is the big one. Before you engage any agency, ensure you know what your exact goals are. Do you care about becoming profitable immediately, or do you care more about increasing exposure/sales numbers? Do you want more email signups? Do you care how many people read an article, or click on a link? Do you care more about brand awareness rather than engagement? Think about what numbers really matter for those goals. Thats what your marketing provider shoudl care about.

    Ask the company/person how they track performance. Ask them for samples of past reports. If they focus mainly on metrics like "Click through Rates", "Page Views", & "Unique Visitors", rather than "Conversion rates", "Return on Ad Spend", "cost per conversion", or any quality-based metrics…like page speeds, bounce & exit rates, mobile compatability, etc…this is a major red flag.

    They should be focused on optimizing your website and marketing around the goals which are important to you. If they're pitching you "page views" when you care about driving revenue, theres a disconnect there. They should also be focused on metrics that enhance user experience, and provide quality content.

  3. Avoid the social media trap A subset of the Metrics Diversion, social media marketing suffers this problem probably more than any other channel. Organic social media marketing is dead . Social media apps have made it almost entirely pay to play now. If someone tries sell you on things like getting you "Likes", "Followers", or any other similar social media metric as an integral part of their marketing strategy….or if they try to convince you that you can still be successful on social media without spending on paid promotion…thats a good indication they're stuck in 2010. Run.

  4. Be cautious of companies that offer marketing as an add-on service, or "We do everything" digital agencies The most common sales tactic I've seen are marketing agencies masquerading as web development or design agencies, or web dev/design agencies masquerading as marketing agencies. Almost every technical agency/expert now offers the full suite of design, digital marketing & SEO services. They sell you on a website build. Then they try to lock you into some long term digital marketing or SEO contract.

    Just because they're good at one thing in the digital world, doesn't mean they're good at everything. They may be perfectly good at building a website, or designing logos…but their marketing skills could be mediocre. Similarly, they may be decent at marketing, but really terrible at building websites (and good marketing is pointless without a good site to back it up). Its really easy to spread yourself too thin in this game, and offer clients too much.

    Personally, even though I could offer full-suite digital services and have enough experience to do so, I don't. Partly because I simply don't like doing some of it, and partly because I wouldn't be able to give each client the attention needed on each project. Its sometimes better to hire different providers for each marketing competency, managed by one central person on your team.

    In my experience the best marketers tend to have a wide range of knowledge, but are more specialized in their service offerings around their best skills. Which segways into my next point.

  5. Avoid using a small agency with too many clients. Many agencies boast about how fast they've grown and how many clients they have. They relay this as evidence of their success. But this is a red flag to me. Running effective marketing strategy takes personal attention. It takes little effort to sign on new clients. Many agencies get greedy, taking on more than they can handle, and the quality of work suffers. A lot of smaller agencies have one developer and one designer split between all of their many clients - and simply don't have the experienced resources needed to effectively manage their load.

    Ask them how many clients they currently have, and then ask them how many full time employees they have on their team in each role. Will you have a dedicated project manager? How experienced is their team? Does it sound like they have a ton of clients for how many skilled employees are actually in the company?

    I recommend looking for a company/consultant who limits how many clients they take on so they can focus on quality.

  6. Bigger agencies aren't always better Conversely to the last point, the benefit of going with larger agencies is they typically have many more resources to work with, with good project management processes, and extensive combined experience in the space.

    The downside is they tend to operate like a faceless machine, and its easy for a small company to get caught as a cog in their wheel. They are slower to adapt to changes in the industry, and are often less likely to put as much effort into customizing campaigns instead of recycling ideas. They find a "rinse and repeat" process, and jam you into it. They rarely go "the extra mile" to give you more than what you paid for. And they're also likely to pass your marketing campaigns off to "the B team", to be managed by some inexperienced kid fresh out of college.

    Bigger agencies are often more expensive - but they're often just using many of the same tools smaller guys are. And I've seen many clients surprised they didn't see any results after flushing away thousands of dollars on a big marketing company with a ton of name recognition.

  7. Don't run any paid ad campaigns until your site is fully optimized This is another very common mistake I see. Marketers (especially those that get paid based on ad spend), will typically try to rope you into starting campaigns as soon as possible. They want to start showing you numbers asap.

    But, if you're running marketing that takes visitors to content that isn't fully optimized for conversions, you're flushing money down the drain. The first step before you spend a dollar on paid ads should be a full audit and optimization of your website & web presence. This should be done by either the marketing agency or a 3rd party consultant.

    You should look for a marketer that shares this philosophy. Ask them about their process for getting started. How soon they want to start running ads? What things do they look at before running ads? If they want to just jump in and start running ads immediately, take this as a bad sign.

  8. As a follow up to that. NEVER invest in digital marketing campaigns until you confirm you have analytics implemented correctly. You also should know how to read these analytics yourself. Running campaigns without being able to accurately track performance is a dangerous game.

    Do you have Google Analytics or similar tracking set up? Is your Facebook pixel implemented correctly? Do you have event & conversion tracking set up? Do you know your conversion rate? Do these numbers make sense and match your sales numbers? Do you know your way around your analytics software?

    Your marketing provider should care about this before they do anything else.

  9. Don't fall into the SEO trap. I've mentioned this in past posts. As search engines are getting smarter, SEO as a standalone service is dying a slow death. 10-15 years ago an SEO expert was like a magician. There were ways to essentially trick search engines into ranking your site at the top for any keyword you want, with tactics like link schemes and keyword stuffing. Today, search engines have evolved. They care about delivering high quality, relevant content to searchers, hosted on high quality websites. They've closed most of the loopholes to exploit the ranking algorithms.

    So the game of SEO today has evolved into playing with the system, rather than against it. Its about making your site appear as relevant and high-quality to search engines as possible. Its become far more focused on content creation than anything else.

    But many people still look at SEO as this magic "free money generator" tool. And many companies are paying WAYYY too much to sub par SEO service providers still stuck in the past…and still giving the same bs guarantees, with the same outdated tactics. You'll end up paying $3k per month for them to spend an hour spitting out a report you could have gotten yourself for free.

    If they guarantee you ranking positions. Run. If they promise you SEO results in any definitive timeline. Run. If they don't have experience with "Rich Snippets" or "Schema" markup, run. If they're trying to charge you a non-insignificant amount of money for general monthly "SEO Reporting" without content creation services, run.

    First and foremost, your SEO agency should be focused on helping you get quality, relevant content on your site, and ensuring it meets technical SEO standards.

  10. Beware of "Black Hat" Marketing These guys are a dying breed, but they're still out there en masse. Black hat marketers are the guys trying to "trick" people into clicking to their sites. They try to exploit loopholes in search engines. They create dummy pages for backlinking schemes. They blast spam emails. They make those annoying popups you can't close. In some cases they can get you impressive short term results…but they also put you at risk for getting your site banned from search engines & social media. They also piss people off.

    If their tactics seem shady, stay away. Again, whoever you hire should be focused on creating quality content.

  11. Focus on design & content - good marketing revolves around good creatives.

    Check out their design portfolio. Does it look like something that would keep you interested? Check out ads they've run. Are they interesting and original?

    What kind of content creation ability do they have? Can they make videos? Infographics? Can they copywrite blog posts?

  12. Tests, Tests, and more Tests Good web development & advertising is based around testing. What works for one company may not work for another. What works for one audience may not work for yours.

    Whether A/B tests, or some other methodology…a good advertising agency is always testing. They're testing to find the perfect page layout. The perfect ad text. The perfect image. The perfect audience demographic. They should always be building an image of what works, and what doesn't for your company company.

    All too often I see companies launch campaigns with a single creative version, marketed towards a single audience, with no testing on the campaigns or the site.

    Ask them if they A/B test their campaigns. Do they optimize your site? What sorts of things do they test? How do they analyze & track these tests?

  13. Don't pay for marketing services as a percentage of ad spend This is a more personal peeve. Many agencies will charge companies their fee as a percentage of how much they spend on advertising. I think its bullshit, and encourages the agency to pigeon-hole you into dumping money into ineffective campaigns.

    You should be paying hourly, on retainer, or even a percentage of performance results.

  14. Don't lock yourself into a long term contract without a trial period/performance-based cancellation option. This is a big problem. Agencies will try to get you to sign onto a long term contract you can't get out of. I've seen multiple clients end up in law suits against marketing companies they got sucked into a year long contract with, but realize they're not delivering any results after month 3.

    I personally always try to offer clients short term starting contracts of 1-3 months as trial periods, with the option to extend after a review. Look for companies that give you flexible options for your contract. Ensure theres some trial period built in where you can vet their performance. Alternatively, set some performance goals, and tell them you want the option to cancel the agreement if they don't meet those goals.

  15. Consider hiring an internal digital marketing expert or an outside personal consultant/coach. Digital marketing is really a full time job to do it correctly. Analyzing. Planning & executing campaigns. Writing content.

    You need somebody dedicated to it. Even though they can compete with some of my services, I often still advise clients that the best approach is to hire a CMO or marketing director as a full time employee/partner of the company. They should be highly tech savvy, and already have experience across a wide range of marketing channels. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck in the long run that way.

    If that’s not an option, an outside individual consultant is a good substitute. A good consultant should be able to help coach you and your team to run marketing campaigns effectively yourselves, and guide you through it.

  16. Stay away from paid "Influencer" campaigns & email blasts unless you know exactly what you're doing. Seriously. I'll write a separate post on this. But in general, don't beleive any of the numbers influencer marketing agencies, influencers themselves, or email marketing companies are telling you at face value. If somebody wants to promote your company for free product (assuming your costs are relatively low) or even a referral %…go for it.

The "influencer" bubble is real right now. Almost as a rule you won't make back what you pay for these campaigns unless you do it in exactly the right way….and most people don't.

To summarize, a sucker is born every day...don't be one of them.

Do your research & get informed. Look for a reputable agency who doesn't seem like they're just trying to lock you into a long contract without results. Don't sign a long contract without a trial period or way out of it. Don't pay based on ad spend. Don't work with Black Hat marketers. Remember an SEO should be focused on creating content. Organic social media is dead. Don't pay for social media "influencer" campaigns.

The agency itself should focus on quality-based metrics, rather than quantity. If they're small, they should only have a few clients. If they're big, they should make you feel important & give you personal attention. They should be specialized in their field. They should be creative & design oriented. They should be tech savvy and analytical.

And most importantly, they should be willing & able to coach/guide you to fully understand exactly what they're doing.
