Quick Question about keywords in City/Geographical names and their abbreviations earn by blogging adsense income

Many of my SEO clients are based geographically in the same city, but most residents of the city abbreviate the name of it in terms of how they talk and use Google search for anything in the city (similar to 'Indianapolis' and 'Indy'). If the search volume for both keywords is about the same, should I be using both abbreviation and the actual name of the city or is it best to just choose one or the other?
