Why would the English version of my homepage be ranking for Spanish keywords when I also have a Spanish version of my homepage? earn by blogging adsense income

The homepages are /en/ and /es/.

We have the hreflang tags in use.

Yet, for some reason, Google has decided that our English homepage should be a high ranking page for a Spanish term.

Any ideas why?
