I am in the process of building out backlinks for my eCommerce site, where I am starting from zero. Through my prospecting, I found a website that, until last month, was selling the exact stuff I am. Now, the site is a landing page offering the domain for sale. I contacted the owner, and he wants $8,000. The site has an okay domain authority and backlink profile, but I'm wondering if it's worth it. Here are some stats that might be important:
- Ahrefs DR: 37
- Moz DA: 43
- Ahrefs estimated monthly traffic value: $640
- Ahres estimated traffic: 260 visitors (owner claims 4,700 monthly)
- Total Backlinks: 6,000
- Total Do-follow Referring Domains: 320
- ~100 decent quality referring domains (DR: 20-40, relevant content & anchor text)
- ~60 referring domains DR:50-80
- ~15 highly sough-after backlinks (.edu and big players in my niche)
- Two lesser sites (DR:14 & 16) in the same niche are selling for ~$4,000
Just to note, if I purchase the site, I would build it out and make it my main business, rather than redirecting to my current site.
As an alternative to buying, I'm considering doing broken link building with all the backlinks. With the site being a domain-squatting landing page, it is no longer valuable to the linking sites' audiences, so I think I could get some links. The drawback there is, at best, I only capture a fraction of the links.
I've never bought a site before or even dealt much in link building. Am I foolish to consider paying $8,000? Is that a steal? I'd really like to hear from some SEO pros.
