Hello SEO redditers !
We are a web agency, which first service is to create websites. We also have a digital marketing (mainly PPC) pole, in which I am as the SEO manager of the agency. It means that I have as mission to develop SEO in the agency.
To do so, i’m currently working on a process, the one I explain below. The goal is to have it as a base for any client, that we will adapt to each one. It’ll be a big document, which will evolve and progress with time.
Client knowledge
First of all, I setup a meeting with the client to learn more about his expectations, needs and wishes. It allows me to understand how well he knows SEO and digital marketing on a larger scale. If he wants instant results, I won't work with him but redirect him to our account managers.
Even if we have already access to Analytics, we ask them about their conversion rate, conversion basket... Have they done SEO in the past ? What do they want from us ? etc...
That's a classic step, yet very very important.
Audits
Then, we sell a full audit of their situation. It contains 4 steps :
TECHNICAL AUDIT
We analyse their on around 100 different points, based mainly on Annielytics audit. Things such as sitemap.xml, robots.txt, 404, 301, noindex, HTTPS, speed, nofollow, rel=prev/next, canonicals, duplicate, Hn architecture…
SEMANTICS AUDIT
We collect informations about their actual ranking, competition ranking, ranking they’d like to have, and opportunities from KW lists (Ubersuggest & SEMRush). Then we mix these informations to get the best possibilities. We finish with a list of KW that are the best ones to work on, taking lot of elements into consideration.
NETLINKING AUDIT
We look at their situation. Do they have a lot of backlinks, are they good quality ? Did they lost some ? Do their competition has a lot of backlinks ? From where ? We also look for things like quote of their website without link, and their surroundings : blogs that looks interesting for exemple.
OPPORTUNITIES
This one is a bit special. We, as SEOs, are the only ones to look at things like CRO or UX in the agency. Of course, developers and designers have knowledge about this stuff, but they don’t go as deep as we do. So we include it in our SEO job. Also, it is now known that user experience has an impact on ranking (dwell time, rebound rate…). Here, we mainly look at pain points of their website, which are elements that can kill their conversion rate, or the user experience. For SMO, we just look if they are using social media, if it’s something that has potential in their business field.
Strategy
Once the audits are done, we go to the strategy. It is done in three steps.
HEALTHY BASIS
What I call “Healthy basis” is the foundation of technical optimization for SEO on their website. For example, if their robots.txt is blocking google crawler, or if all their pages are noindex… That’s an extreme but I’ve already seen that. We begin by getting strong foundations, before going further.
This is sold at once, for the time we decide we need to fix everything.
GOALS
This step is dangerous in the SEO field. We define clear goals, using the SMART method. It can be, for exemple :
- Getting 10 backlinks from 60+ authority websites in 6 months
- Get the CTR up from 2% to 3% in 2 months
- Get 10% more organic traffic in 6 months
We do it with extreme precaution, only if we are 100% sure we can do it, and generally with the goal being less impressive that what we can do, to protect us. The idea here is that the clients knows where he is going. We don’t wanna be here like “Yeah man, give us 1000€/month for 6 months, and mayyyybe you gonna have some results in a year”.
ACTIONS
Once the foundation is here and the goals are set, we get to actions. Here, we do something close to a Gantt chart, with the different actions we decide to take. It mainly is a mixing between semantics optimizations & netlinking strategy, along with some technical opportunities work (like getting stars rich snippet)
This is sold on a monthly basis of x hours, depending on the monthly time we need.
REPORTING
We see each client every 1 to 3 months, depending on the formula that fit them. Every 6 months, we do a bigger meeting, checking and explaining what have been done, what the results are and what’s next.
