Are .gov & .edu backlinks really useful nowadays? earn by blogging adsense income

I’ve read a bunch of articles about .gov/edu backlinks and just can’t make head nor tail whether they somehow differ from regular backlinks or not. In other words, let’s take 2 websites that both have the same stats, but one is .com and the other is .gov/edu, is there any difference in the benefit you get linking from such sites.
