Newbie Question: What exactly does keyword competition mean? earn by blogging adsense income

As a content creator, Im trying to get to understand SEO and Keyword Research a little bit more. Ive noticed that all the tools that can be utilized to perform keyword research (whether on Google, Youtube, or something else) have a competition metric. Initially I thought that it referred to the competition that I as a content creator have of people uploading content with those same keywords. But it turns out, as I understand it, that it refers to the competition that an advertiser would have on that particular keyword if he/she wants to put up ads on those specific keywords.

So with this said, how can I view competition (if possible) from the point of view of the content creator?
