A little about myself, I have been doing SEO for a very long time, and I was fortunate enough to do it during a time where google could easily be manipulated with a few hundred dollars worth of links. I was able to dominate some of the worlds most competitive industries. Even back then, there was over optimization penalties and it was an obsession of mine to recover websites, I would even buy websites who would suffer from an obvious penalty and easily recover them (usually by getting some sitewide links removed that were obviously paid for)
My focus was always about links. I saw panda and penguin coming long before most people in this industry did. I saw the path google was going down and I figured if these things were obvious to me, then it was only a matter of time that google would put an end to cheap/low quality links and link schemes such as link wheels and blog networks.
I took a break for a few years, started a family, also started a business, since most of my SEO efforts were affiliate in nature, google likes cutting out the middleman and giving favor to the actual companies making and offering the products. So I started my own company, with an actual location, and it has been great, my marketing and business experience really pays off and I have done a good job mostly by just being passionate about it and wanting to always improve. We are legitimately one of the leaders in the industry I am in, though google does not see it that way based on our rankings, which is fine, I never really focused on SEO because we grew so fast locally, growing globally would be a bit difficult to expand to quickly.
Anyway, now that I am back and have my SEO hat on, I am quickly seeing that backlinks are not as dominating of a factor as they used to be. They are still a big factor, but what I am seeing now, is that google is favoring content even more. More specifically, I am seeing it favor websites that have a certain amount of content. The one thing that I can see clearly, I can not find any blog posts or discussions about anywhere and that is the amount of pages of content.
We all are trying for the same thing, to have a site that google favors and looks at as an "authority" where when you post something, it gets instant favor in the SERPs because google trusts your site and its content. If a non authority website posts an in depth, insightful article with images, videos etc, it will not rank as highly because the site as a whole may be considered "thin" or low quality.
I also clearly see that google favors images/video content along with long form, thorough content. How many pages of real content did you create before noticing a consistent increase in rankings? I wish there were articles that discussed this but I could not find any
