Is it even necessary to ask client what their goals are before executing an SEO campaign? earn by blogging adsense income

I mean, isn't it plainly obvious that the goal for every business is to conversions/sales to make money? I never understood when people say we should ask clients/businesses whe goals are that they're trying to achieve with SEO. Obviously making money and getting that return on investment is the ultimate goal. Why would a business just want a lot of traffic or engagement rates? So I don't think this is a question that's quite necessary to ask, it's pretty obvious. Every business wants to make more money.
