My ranking took a dive after I internationalized my main page earn by blogging adsense income

As part of beginning to internationalize my site, I long time ago translated certain segments of it into different languages. I would only translate those parts that I could do without machine translation.

This worked well, my ranking was growing steadily for years.

But then the fatal thing happened. I decided to "fully" translate it. This meant to get rid of those parts that were in English on e.g. the German version of the page. As the site does not contain a lot of prose in its core, that was doable.

This is what I did:

• Titles were built up using short machine translated expressions relevant to my page. Dash separated.
• Paragraphs that I had no proper translations for were simply hidden dynamically by updating the CSS-style to display:none.

90% of my visitors used to come from English speaking countries, but after the change, this is now about 25%. Despite my main English page not being changed. The number of organic visitors I get two months after is about 30% of what I had before my "improvement". I undid my changes a few weeks ago, but to no avail. The built-up ranking seems unrecoverable.

I realized that what I did can be regarded as

• "keyword stuffing" the titles. And that on several different pages, in multiple languages. Most my landing pages suddenly seemed keyword stuffed.
• It might seem that I tried to trick the search engine by trying to feed it text that was hidden for humans (by using display:none dynamically)

Both critical mistakes, SEO-wise I have read. Only speculating here, I'm not a SEO-person. Do you guys think such a loss of ranking is normal after the mistakes I did?

Surely have I been penalized, and I wonder what can be done about it.

I meant it well, Google. I just wanted my vistors to see fully translated pages.
