A hilariously bad (?) SEO optimization guide... earn by blogging adsense income

Which is to say, my guide. And a question about what I'm missing.

How do I optimize for SEO? In what I worry is a laughably simple way:

1) find a (preferably longtail) kw that isn't already picked over, or hotly contested, using Adwords/Moz

2) check related keywords

3) work the first, and related, kw's into the article (and title, and H2's) in a natural way.

4) after all this, make sure the content is still useful, and doesn't sound like a content turkey full of keyword stuffing

I get the sense what I do isn't exactly best practices. Am I on the right track? Anybody else have tips? I'd appreciate any info.
