Please forgive the beginner question. I designed a website for free for a family member around a year ago and they have just contacted me to tell me they are carrying out SEO on the website and asked me why the website doesn't have an SSL certificate. "It's very important for the website" they tell me.
It was my understanding that you would only need encryption if you're handling sensitive information. The website in question only has a basic contact form, it doesn't handle people's card information and people can't make payments on the site etc. I never suggested getting an SSL certificate to them because I didn't think they needed it, and obviously since they asked that I do the website for free I assumed they were short on cash.
So in this case, would it be a waste of money? or does an SSL certificate make a website rank higher on Google, regardless of if it's needed.
