"Parasite" ranking - does it convert? earn by blogging adsense income

It seems a significant alternative to ranking your website is to rank something else with inbuilt authority like Youtube videos. And yes, this approach seems to work - definitely easier to rank a new video than a new website. BUT it's of no practical use if the organic traffic it delivers doesn't convert. So if $$ = traffic x conversions, then it's fine to increase traffic but only if conversions don't suffer. So any thoughts about which parasite sites offer the optimal combination?
