Please be gentle since english is not my first language and i might screw up the phrasing a bit.
You can divide SEO in Onpage and Offpage optimization.
Onpage optimization means all the measures you can take directly on your website to boost your google ranking factors.
Offpage optimization consists of all measures happening on other pages, for example link building.
In this post i will be focusing on some of the Onpage measures.
Mobile
- It has become more and more important for SEO purposes to have mobile friendly sites, in my opinion the easiest option is to create a responsive design for your homepage, meaning it simply scales to the resolution of phones or tablets. The problem with this is, that it might be hard to click on some buttons or read some text.
- Another option, which requires more effort, is to build a version of your homepage that has been optimized for mobile, meaning it is almost like an app.
- The last option, what would be a bad choice, is to build a completely different page for mobile users, but since you would have to optimize two sites, it would defeat the purpose. Additionally it is important to have the same content on your mobile page as on your "normal" homepage.
Loading Speed
- Google does not like slow loading pages at all, so it is important to make it load as fast as possible without removing any content. This could be achieved for example optimizing all of your pictures. It is often the case, that some pictures are way bigger then they need to be, downscaling that could have a huge impact on your loading speed.
<h1> <h2> <h3> etc. tags
- Every page should have only one <h1> Tag, because it is kind of the title of the content (it can be the same as the meta-title, it is a misconception that this would be considered duplicate content)
-
The structure is important aswell, for example:
- <h1> (The title)
- <h2> (The chapter)
- <h3> (Structured Content headline)
- <h3> (Structured Content headline)
- <h2> The next chapter)
- <h3> (Structured Content headline)
- <h1> (The title)
Meta-Data
- Meta-Title
- When you are looking for something on google, the Meta-Title is the first thing you are going to see. It should contain the most important information, that you want your customers/visitors to see.
- It is recommended to have max 60 characters in your title, since the rest of it will be cut of and displayed with "...". Google is calculating the length via Pixels, so keep in mind that a "G" takes up more space than a "I".
- Meta-Description
- The description is what you see below the www adress, it shouldnt be no longer than about 160 characters and up to about 920 pixels long. It should contain the most interesting parts of your homepage.
- On mobile devices, the max limit is about 680 pixels and 120 characters, the rest is going to be cut off.
Keyword Analysis
- Google can't find your homepage about your product if you dont write what it is about, the keyword analysis helps finding the right keywords for your niche and which ones you should put in the articles on your homepage. (It is important though that you dont focus completely on those keywords so you cant simply put keywords at random in your text, it has to be a full article or whatever your site is about. This can be quite difficult, because it takes time and effort to build an article, that is useful for the reader and contains all of the important keywords in the right amount)
- Google Suggest/Trends: This is the most easiest way to find your keywords, simply put the keyword you want to rank for into google and check the suggested searches and the trends on the bottom of the search page.
- Google Adwords Keyword Planner: Put the keywords you want to rank for in the designated box and rank them for search volume.
- WDF*IDF Analysis: This measure is looking for the keywords, that the 10/20/30 highest ranking pages for your keyword are using on their product-pages etc. The problem there is that you have to filter out the irrelevant ones, for example on a shop there might be their name one of the most used keywords, and this is useless for you.
Keep in mind these are just the basics and feel free to add something or virtually slap me if i wrote complete bullshit.
