A client of mine has been sold to another holding company and thus has had to undergo a brand re-naming exercise.
This, of course, means a new website. The trouble I'm having with this is that it's not a migration like what we'd normally see - that meaning that they're not redirecting the old domain at all. Nor can they, as there's all sorts of legal reasons around the intellectual property of the brand name (and therefore domain) so they're keeping it live.
They've basically put up some holding text (lovely black text on a white background - looks like an error page) saying "We've been sold, we've re-named to 'x'" with a link (which is nice).
A second part to this is that they've done a URL re-write on all URLs, so no matter what you put past the first / it'll come up with the message. This is instead of redirecting all the pages to the homepage and just having the one page with that re-naming message. This is bad because Google is still crawling the URLs it has in its index, thinking they're still live, when in fact they aren't, so they aren't going to get dropped any time soon, I imagine.
All we've been able to get so far is a canonical tag on the old domain to the new domain.
The team are reaching out to all linking domains to ask them to change the anchor text and link location, but that's a long and arduous process to try and get some authority back.
The question is: do you have any more recommendations/suggestions/tips/help for a migration that doesn't allow any redirects? Or am I doomed to once again hit my head against the brick wall of the legal and compliance team's office?
