Should I extend my index pages meta description from 155 characters to ~290. earn by blogging adsense income

I would not minus any content from it, merely add content until it is around 290. I have done this with other pages on the site but are looking for to rank for more focus keywords. It is scary obviously to do this on the main page. What is all of your opinions?
