I wouldn't attempt it myself, but if someone (even another large company) was going to launch a Facebook competitor, right now would be the time to do it, IMO. entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

While I personally benefit from Facebook's ad platform, and therefore wouldn't want them to start nose diving just yet, I think right now is the perfect climate for a competitor to pop up. Here's my reasoning:

  1. Facebook is starting to look like myspace from a design perspective... how long before we can set profile music and customized backgrounds?

  2. News Feeds have become like 60% crappy memes and crappy news articles with waaaay too many 3rd party apps. It's like meme landfill.

  3. The obvious problem with Facebook's privacy... to be honest, I don't think most people care, but the negative press is starting to stick.

  4. They are trying to do way too much (like just now launching a dating platform).

  5. They are starting to try and censor content (they accidentally released a "Is this hate speech" button recently, which will surely be abused).

  6. They are trying to push their video platform, but their compression algorithm freaking SUUUUCKS. Youtube is a million times better.

I think a competitor who provided a new, nice clean interface, without all the privacy concerns, and the ability to have posted content expire could take some market share away from them with the right amount of capital. It would also need it's own "shtick" or gimmick however, don't know what that would be.
