A post I wrote recently about why I chose to change my business strategy. Thoughts and feedback appreciated...
“Your mission matters. Products play a key role in embodying your brand and fueling the company but ultimately all products are but an individual experience in the story of your startup. So is your story a one hit wonder or series of successes greater than the sum of its parts?” - Matt Ward
I read those words not that long ago and it made me think. Why do we do what we do? In terms of business, are we just creating cool products for a chunk of change? Or, do we stand for something bigger than ourselves and work towards a goal?
With a name like “For the People” you would think we had that part figured out. But, as most people who start this journey of building a business we had to reconsider our ultimate motives and ambitions. Build something quickly for ourselves or build something consistently over time that lasts for generations. Companies come and go, but the impact of giving and serving can last forever. You never really know the full impact of your own life or actions in the present time and neither will any business.
We learn a lot from the past. What worked - what didn’t work - and why. Entrepreneurs study business models, industries, and products. They use statistics to figure how they can improve on what was done before them. At one time a certain company was booming, and not long after they’re filing for bankruptcy. Possibly disrupting the economy and most certainly many employees’ lives. What happened? What one thing did them in? Maybe they built their foundation on a product or line of them thinking they would always see the silver lining of high profits. Maybe they didn’t consider how times would change and people’s need for their service would slowly die. Most likely a combination of the two and a host of other modern day reasons.
We aim to build our brand by giving to people in need, representing the underrepresented, and empowering communities. We hope to do this by creating unique designs with our products highlighting aspects of culture and everyday life. The proceeds of our sales will be donated to worthy causes here in the U.S. and abroad. We also like to come up with fun designs every now and then. Because, well, we’re artists and designers and we can’t help ourselves. So, along with specific themes and series of designs, we will also feature one-off or limited edition products. Our end goal is to leave this world better than the way we found it. One design. One product. One action at a time.
