Uni admission consulting - how to go about customer acquisition? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Hey guys,

First – thanks everyone in this subreddit, love to read it – some of you are having great insights. That is why I am bringing my problem to you. Even though the question is very open-ended :)

Would be great if you could help me to crack how to acquire customers for a University admission consulting service. Since the beginning I knew this would be a pain – would be great to know how you would go about it before I will start throwing money on PPC :)

A bit of background: With my GF we decided to start a small consulting business – helping people with their applications to UK universities. We are both graduates from nice schools, the process is very standard and if you understand it, it is feasible to get in to almost everyone. We can help with personal statements / essays / recommendation letter etc. – we can prepare the whole application easily. This is very early stage.

I believe in the product. Firstly it delivers – we pivoted with my brother, cousin and couple of our friends (all getting great offers considering their background). Secondly the value proposition makes sense financially – why would you spend $80k on a 2nd tier school if you can spend $82$ for a 1st tier, you are investing in your future and the brand name is so important in the end (Imagine UCL and University of Manchester kind of difference).

Now I have 2 simple (or not) questions:

We have a website ready, the season will be starting soon. Would be great to know how would you approach the customer acquisition

  • We have some initial thoughts how to go about it - I can see two streams: (1) Work with schools and (2) Approach applicants directly.

  • A partnership with schools seems reasonable – they want to have successful graduates. Either they can pay for it themselves or they can recommend us.

  • Direct sales to uni applicants are the other option – here the idea is to go through PPC on Google / FB. And through posts on different forums where people discuss uni applications. Then it can scale with WOM (which works well in this space)

  • Does anything else comes to your mind? What factors should I consider?

What customer segment does the most sense to you? And what geographical reach should we go with?

  • I can imagine working with local schools (it would be probably hard to get clients from other countries in the beginning).

  • With the B2C part, I can imagine targeting people form the whole Europe / whatever other market (e.g. Asia). But I am not sure how much I want to divert my forces (I have quite demanding daytime job...)

Happy to answer any questions!

Thanks a lot for your thoughts :) Jan
