Hey r/entrepreneur!
I’ve been a long time follower, but never posted here. This Subreddit has been super inspiring to me over the years, especially the posts by scottkeyes on how he built Scott’s Cheap Flights.
Right now two friends and I are building a business called The Wander Lab. We will sell customizable travel accessories - starting with passport covers.
As we are still in the very beginning stages, I thought it would be cool to chronicle our journey starting at square 1. If enough of you think like this, then we’ll post updates to Reddit approx every month with news of our successes and shortcomings. We believe in being super open, and will be happy to share strategies we implemented, as well as (most) numbers with you.
Who Are We?
All three of us - Ricky, Tony, and Zach (me) - are currently living in Vietnam. Ricky has Vietnamese ancestry, but grew up in Santa Cruz. He sells a variety of products in different niches, and has been able to automate most of it. Tony is also an American with Vietnamese ancestry. He is a PR + branding expert who has worked with brands like Spotify and Amazon. I’m a Canadian who sells shirts to Elon Musk fanboys online.
As for the three of us, we all have a deep love for travel. I’ve been to 7 countries in the past 12 months, and will be going to Italy and Colombia before the summer. Ricky and Tony have also traveled extensively. Ricky has lived in Asia for over 5 years now, and spends his time between Vietnam and Bali. Tony has traveled extensively throughout southeast Asia, and has lived in several U.S. cities.
One of the best things about living in Vietnam, besides the cheap cost of living and ridiculously good Pho, is access to high quality consumer goods manufacturing. The quality is on par with anything I’ve seen in North America.
This is remarkable because when I was here 14 years ago I had a very different feel of the country. It now feels much more modern, and it’s very clear that many people are entering the middle class. The hustle and focus on the future that the Vietnamese have is super inspiring!
Why We’re Excited
In general, something we feel that consumer goods are lacking is the ability to customize. It’s weird that it’s 2018 and yet so few brands offer customization of their products. We want to own the space for customizable travel products.
Each of us have been playing in this space in different roles for years. We are all experienced in either creating beautiful consumer products, branding, or delivering exceptional customer experiences. We believe that this synergy will enable us to go much further together than any of us could go alone.
Next Steps
- Launch a viral contest to gather emails pre-launch
- We are in the process of designing the website, and will soon hire a developer to bring our vision to life
- Finalize the passport cover designs
- Build out the social accounts
Questions, Ideas?
If you have any questions, or things you would like us to address in the next post, please let us know in the comments! We'd also love to hear any ideas you have for us at this early stage. We’ll be sure to check back regularly and reply 🙂
Thanks beautiful humans of r/entrepreneur!
