Medium vs own site blog earn by blogging adsense income

I’m working for a company that is launching a new product and website. They’re trying to determine if they should host their own blog or use Medium.

My understanding is Medium is not ideal for SEO because all credit goes to the Medium domain and even for backlinks there’s no real benefit as Medium adds no follow tags to their posts.

A number of well ranking competitor sites are using Medium though. What’s the benefit as far as SEO (if there is one)?-
