What's the verdict on sandboxing of new sites? earn by blogging adsense income

I know some people don't like the term "sandbox", but a lot of people agree with the theory. I keep seeing six months mentioned as the time it takes to start increasing rankings, and I'm happy to wait it out, but here's what I've noticed:

For the first three months, there wasn't much happening at all, except for direct traffic from links I dropped around the place.

Around four months, organic traffic came in waves. This was too regular to simply be a coincidence. You would either get three at a time (as viewed in GA - "Active Users Right Now") or they would come ten minutes apart like clockwork.

It's almost like Google would open the gate, so to speak, and then shut it, because it's a new site. With hundreds of millions of people online, it seems hard to believe that it would be so regular.

Direct traffic happened randomly, as expected, but after the five month period, organic traffic has started to increase (it's at five-and-a-half months now).

It seems like a sandbox-style arrangement, but does that really exist, or am I just looking for patterns to confirm my theory?

Look forward to everyone's thoughts.
