As anyone today, I'd like to optimize mobile experience for users by reducing the document size. This is for a shopping website, so the full menu structure is category-subcategory-subcategory-men/women/children so it's a huge hierarchy that needs to be easily accessed by the user. Now if I render the entire menu on serverside and just present is collapsible accordion style menu on the client side, that means there's a ton of overhead in every document request. One option would be to just pull the menu stuff dynamically from the server as needed. But this would mean the page doesn't have pretty much any semantic html menuwise for crawlers to read. Is this gonna be an issue that will hit SEO? Naturally I'd have a full Sitemap.xml for crawlers to find so I'm thinking that should cover it?
Basically I'm asking can I do lightweight mobile page w/ dynamically built ajax menu for humans and a hefty hefty sitemap.xml for robots, and keep everybody happy? It feels like having cake and eating it too but I'm thinking it should be doable at this point, right?
Any good studies/articles on this subject I should read?
