Publication date VS updated date & Google earn by blogging adsense income

I update old posts with original and good content whenever it's needed for the topic the post is about.

I've included a date published and updated date in the posts (WordPress).

However Google only seems to be displaying the date published. Which in the serps looks really old 2012 VS the update date of 2018.

I've written updated in 2018 in the meta but it doesn't stand out like the original date published.

Is there a solution to this?

I seem to remember that there were issues with re publishing old posts & seo..... Or is that now a myth?
