Basic SEO Question regarding subdomains earn by blogging adsense income

Quick question - would setting up a subdomain for a completely different subject have any impact of the main website's SEO attempts?

Eg. If the main website was about Gardening and there had a subdomain about Cars - would the subdomain harm the main Gardening website at all?
