Traffic Drops 50% in a Day -- Competitive Attack or Google Algorithm Update? earn by blogging adsense income

No. I did not try to buy traffic. Period. Never have. Never will.

However, on 1/26 I had a huge surge in traffic that looks like a bunch of bots. My average daily users for the month prior was ~1600 users/day. Roughly 1400 of those users come from organic search. I maybe got 100 users from direct traffic daily. On 1/26, I saw a surge in direct traffic (~700 sessions) in a 2-hour period with a 100% bounce rate and an average 0s spent on the site. NO. I DID NOT BUY TRAFFIC.

From 1/27 forward, my organic search traffic has dropped in half. Interestingly, my Google Search Console "Position" ratings have increased for my most valuable keywords in the same period. There is no corresponding change in the overall trend in these keywords on Google Trends.

I'm left wondering what caused my sudden (and continued) drop in traffic? If this was an attack by a competitor, how do I legitimately recover from appearing to have a ton of suspicious traffic? If the surge in unusual direct traffic has nothing to do with it, what new Google algorithm update is out there that has decided to hate me?

Any help or thoughts be much appreciated. I've worked so hard to build-up this site that to see it all collapse in a day is very frustrating. Thank you.
