Is it impossible to rank if your site has only 1 or 0 backlinks? earn by blogging adsense income

Just wondering. Even though you have excellent content throughout your website, would it be impossible to rank for all the prominent keywords if your website only has 1 or worst case, ZERO backlinks? Or is it still possible with the "Content is King" content heavy approach?
