I run a video game news website. How important is it to grow facebook/twitter & social media following vs organic SEO? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I've just booted up another, run of the mill video game news website. So far, I haven't done much proper research into how to market this. This is what i've done so far

Facebook page for my business, I post articles there, from there I will join gaming groups and or specific game related subgroups, share the article from my personal account and try to spark some discussion about it.

I'm able to get some decent reach if i'm pushy, but it doesn't convert into a lot of clicks (depends on the news and how hot it is). And especially, the reach to facebook page like conversion is very disproportionate. Let's say one new like for every 5000 people I reach via facebook.

With twitter, i'm not so familiar, so I just hastag it and let it flow. Sometimes it goes a bit viral, gets some likes. Very small conversion to an actual follow aswell.

I know people love memes and compilations/trailers and other video content. So i'm planning on on posting more of that content intertwined with news to get some traction going, hopefully.

Here's where i'm wondering where I should put more energy into. I noticed from my metrics, that i've gotten a decent amount of people (15% ish?) directly from search engines, which frankly blew my mind since i'm probably the millionth video game news blog in the world. Hopefully this isn't just the whole early new member of wordpress jetpack SEO optimization giving me a boost and then throwing me out to the curb after the first month.

So this makes me wonder, where should I spend my energy mostly on? Should i focus on organic growth, having a newsletter model and such? Or should I work harder on growing a facebook/twitter following?

I'm very new to the whole digital marketing sphere so i'm going off common sense and personal ideas but i'm trying to form a more solid roadmap for what I can do to reach more people and get readers to come back on their own. I'm not sure if social media is where I should put most of my eggs into, or if i'm missing a bigger picture here.
