New businesses: investments & profits overview entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Popular business to start lists are everywhere but they usually miss concrete information if you are actually looking to start something new.

We need to know how much time and money it costs to start and maintain these businesses from scratch, and what the average profits can be. I'm into tech so I just write what I know, but the idea of the list is all sorts of businesses, from window cleaning to owning a restaurant, so please add in your expertises.

 

Software Businesses

• Needed: 36 months experience as developer, business development, designer or marketer, or finding people with complimentary skillsets.

• Money: Runway

• Profit: 3k - 200k /m

• Activities: Maintaining marketing channels, doing customer service, continuous development of features

• Extra: For any chance of succes, only consider doing this if you can already do at least one of the needed skills. For testing out concepts use an MVP. There's a huge difference between an indie startup and a funded startup too.

 

Freelance designer

• Time: 6 months learning at minimum, building portfolio

• Money: 1k (laptop)

• Activities: Finding customers, strategy, making designs, improving skills. Copy pasting stuff from dribbble.

• Profit: $2 - 10k /m

• Extra: If you don't have any customers, just work on your portfolio with fake projects. Also, you can always take on a real project and offer to have the company pay only when they are going to use it.

 

Freelance developer

• Time: 24 months learning at minimum, building portfolio

• Money: 1k (laptop)

• Activities: Forever learning new frameworks, copy pasting code, chilling on github. Customers will find you.

• Profit: $3 - 12k /m

• Extra: Before you can actually look back on work you did 2 years ago and be okay happy with it, you're 6 to 8 years down the line. It takes a lot of time to be a good developer and it's definitely not something to start if you just want to make a bit of money fast.

 

Freelance online marketing

• Time: 12 months learning

• Money: 1k (laptop)

• Activities: Forever learning new frameworks, copy pasting code, chilling on github.

• Customers will find you. Profit: $3 - 12k /m

• Extra: Become a t-shaped marketer. Start by looking wide, into SEO, SEA, Conversion, PR, Copywriting. Then pick one you like and focus. Do not try to do them all.

 

Fulfilled by Amazon

• Time: A month reading / preparing

• Money: ?

• Activities: Blogging

• Profit: ?

• Extra: I don't have any experience with this, please add if you have.

 

Affiliate marketing

• Time: 1+ year before you have any decent rankings

• Money: <$500

• Activities: Blogging

• Profit: $0 to millions

• Extra: Nowadays it can take several years before you make serious bucks in affiliates. Pick a niche.

 

Owning a MacDonalds

• Time: 9 - 18 months of training

• Money: 1-2 million, 500k own money needed

• Activities: Making sure employees follow the system

• Profit: $157.000 average per location (net personal)

• Extra: Did some basic research. These numbers don't look very attractive if you ask me.

 

Landscaping

• Time: ?

• Profit: ?

• Extra: ?

 

Moving company

• Time: ?

• Money: ?

• Profit: ?
