Discussion- Buying old Domains for their backlinks earn by blogging adsense income

My boss wants me to buy a couple relevant domain names and redirect them to our site for the potentials SEO value. BECAUSE I am always hesitant with Somethin that seems too good to be true, are there any potential black hat type reasons we shouldn’t do this? Again, the domains are fairly relevant, and they have decent external backlinks. Thoughts?
