Does one need to have an online presence these days to be a successful internet "Entrepreneur"? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Is it just me? But it seems to me the most successful online business people are all snake oil salesmen, either with a video or social media following. Seems like this is the only recipe to have online success, selling courses to noobs and the dream of online freedom. Has it always been this bad in the online business / make money online space? Seems to have got to new heights in the past year. :/
