After searching around and finding lots of posts with helpful info on how to produce/import products from China, but not large freight/manufacturing equipment, I decided to just ask. A link to another thread would suffice as an answer!
I am importing a large piece of equipment (laser cutter) directly from China (instead of through a China/US middleman) in order to get more bang for my buck. The transaction is taking place over Alibaba, I've received quotes and spec sheets, everything looks good. They will be shipping the laser via sea freight to my nearest port, where I'll be picking it up via pickup truck. Loading/unloading will be an adventure that I feel capable of solving.
Just a couple quick questions if anyone could help. The seller has told me that I need to "ask a broker for custom clearance and declare the ISF for you."
What does this mean? Additionally, I've already looked up custom costs using the product code they supplied and they don't seem outrageous. Is there any chance that could be wrong and I get reamed upon importation?
Any other pitfalls to look out for? I'm very nervous about this, but once it goes through, it will be a huge upgrade to my business and unlock a lot of opportunity. Thanks!
