Ranking without any backlinks but not on 1st. Please help. earn by blogging adsense income

Hello guys.

I am a newbie in the field of digital marketing and recently landed my first job in the field. I work for a camping site who had a very tight budget at the start. So, instead of hiring a developer my boss asked me to make a website on wix for the time being. I made the website and put in a lot of relevant content too. Fast forward 6 months, I am ranking on the first page for a few of the most relevant keywords related to my business and on the 1st spot for a few.

Now the problem.

A competitor who takes up the first three spots in search has about 4000+ backlinks. HOW??!I wrote a guest post for a good tourism website in India and they gave me one no follow backlink. How does he have soooo many backlinks already? Also, his website is 3 years old. But the quality of content is bad. really bad. Borderline content spamming I'd say.I am advertising on Instagram for lead generation (to keep us up and running) and our operations team tell us we are doing much better than him. But his position on the first place really bothers me.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
