Wordpress/Yoast SEO Plugin Negative SEO Issue earn by blogging adsense income

I'm running through a quick audit of our reported links in Search Console and am finding a reoccurring theme with some of the top listed linking sites: they are via intermediate links coming from Wordpress based sites with Yoast SEO plugins. Is there still an issue with wordpress sites and/or wordpress sites that have the yoast SEO plugin? I know both had exploitable loopholes but last I heard they were remedied. But, here's my thought: What if the webmasters of these WP/Yoast sites never updated their services? Did WP and Yoast push the updates to all sites regardless if they are active or not?
