Is it still possible to outrank High authority sites for Long Tail kw's? earn by blogging adsense income

Hi everyone. I'm just starting with SEO and I have a question. Do long tail keywords still work for small websites without (extensive) link building? I was recently looking for keywords/niche to target and found that for most LTKWs there's an authority website already ranking. And it looks like it doesn't even have to include the KW in question on the page. There can be related KWs on the page and that is enough to rank for a longer tail KW that I'm trying to target. Something to do with the Hummingbird update... Any thoughts on this? How are you doing KW/Niche research today?
