One of my most recent failed businesses was selling watches, accessories, and footwear on eBay and Amazon. The two issues that led to my demise were:
- There is always a loss leader on eBay, and to some degree, Amazon. If something can be bought wholesale for $5 direct from the manufacturer, there is a guy on eBay selling it for $4 brand new-shipped. An example is the popular "Cards Against Humanity," which are selling for lower than the $25 that the company charges on Amazon (and the publisher has made it clear they do not offer wholesale to anyone, so I have no idea how these people are sourcing their product authentically). Brand names, such as Timex, Gucci, etc... are subject to this, and it's even worse with non-name brand products that are saturated by sellers in China.
- On Amazon, unless you are in the Buy Box and front-and-center, no sales flow. Same pricing issue--people want the lowest price or what strikes them immediately (Buy Box). So I would list products that were popular or getting good traffic, but since I wasn't the featured seller, I got no sales. When I listed products that were less popular, but still useful, there was no sales due to no traffic--basically, it felt like there is a reason why certain products are not already saturated with loss leaders, because nobody wants those products and nobody is searching to begin with!
How do people overcome this? I have read through the forums and I find Amazon/eBay success stories that start with a "a-ha!" moment or some kind of prior experience (I read one guy that already worked for a successful e-commerce company, quit, and just started his own company doing exactly what they were doing--essentially, copying their trade secrets and knowing the magician's secrets). But that moment hasn't come for me and I have not worked for a successful e-commerce company to copy their trade secrets....
Any ideas? I am really feeling SOL with what to do now because it seems whether on eBay, Amazon, or Shopify I am always beat by the guy taking a loss for a cent cheaper...
Sorry if this sounds like a rant...just very frustrating and at a loss. Feeling like luck is against me, and I do believe luck is part of the equation to some extent. Otherwise everybody would be successful by just copying a few steps over and over again.
