soft link vs redirect for combining 2 domains into one. earn by blogging adsense income

Although I don't know much about SEO, I agreed to help my son with his two websites, whatever.com and whatever.net. I am going to be transferring both to my host under my main account. I want just a single site to maintain, and whatever.net and whatever.com to display identical results.

I can use either a permanent redirect that I can set through CPanel, or I can use my shell access to create a Unix soft link (ln -s ...) from one root directory to the other. Which would be better and why?

I keep seeing warnings to not duplicate content. Would my plan cause me a duplicate content problem?
