I have been doing SEO for about 18 years and long gone are the days where social bookmarking and directory links are suitable ways to build. Backlinks were always known to be one of the most strongest signals for website rankings but are we now at the point where Backlinks don’t matter if the content is weak?
Despite all my years of experience, it’s still hard to grasp the concept of anything outweighing Backlinks. But I am finally accepting the fact that content is as much of a signal, if not more than Backlinks. It’s easier to build quality content than it is to build authority Backlinks.
All the top results I follow have one thing in common in that they all have a good amount of content. Nicely formatted, mix of images and videos. Most have a blog or a resource section with helpful articles.
So what does it take to become an “authority website”? Obviously a good mix of Backlinks and quality content but what’s the amount of content needed for authority status?
I also see a trend of long content ranking higher. Long, 1500+ word articles with video seem to be the type of content that ranks the highest.
Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.
