People do not want to be marketed to...And that's OKAY entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

It's been a while since I've posted, but I'm in the writing mood. I have been reading quite a bit on the /r/startups and /r/entrepreneur subreddits and the topic of marketing comes up every single day. As it should.

I find myself wanting to respond to all the posts, but I don't have the time to. I figured I'd take some time to get all of my thoughts out in one long post.

I'm not hear to tell you how to market your business or products, but I want to spark your thinking and create a discussion.

The fact is, people do not want to be marketed to. Everyone is sick of seeing ads and everyone is losing trust from brands they have never seen.

This isn't a bad thing. In fact, I'd actually argue that it's good because people have more intent to buy products online than ever before. So how can you capitalize when people don't want you to market to them?

The answer: don't market to them. Seriously... DON'T MARKET TO THEM!

I'm not saying to stop all your ad campaigns. You might be crushing it, and that's great! I'm just saying that you might need to think about what you're trying to accomplish with them and consider trying some new experiments.

Okay, you're probably thinking I'm nuts by now, right?

I'm not crazy and I've been creating off the wall marketing tactics that have converted very well for a few years now. Sometimes I don't have to spend a single penny to get hundreds of people converting to customers.

I'm not going to share all my secrets (yes there are a few internet secrets that little people know about), but hopefully I can get you thinking a little bit.

What do customers actually want? If they want something you're selling, you still have to sell them. Plain and simple. You might have to sell them or your website might have to sell them.

People are compulsive. From my experience, the key factors that get someone past the point of being interested to actually being a paid customer are trust, the experience, referrals, and price...In that order.

When you market, it's not always a good idea to market your product. Market an experience...sell some sort of trust! A perfect example is the mattress company Tuft & Needle. When have you ever seen them try to sell you a mattress? They only thing that they sell is a story. They literally sell you an experience. The experience that mattress companies are greedy and it's time to learn the truth.

Remember how I mentioned that either you have to sell or the website has to sell? Tuft and Needle's home page covers all 4 of the main factors I mentioned as being so important. Trust, the experience, referrals, and price.

If you go to their homepage it shouldn't be hard to pinpoint each one.

Why does it all matter? In order to have a successful platform or website, you need to learn how to drive qualified traffic to your website. More importantly, you need to drive that traffic to your website and have them sold before they even arrive.

So what are you going to do?

  • Are you going to sell them your trust?

  • Are you going to give an experience before they even arrive?

  • Maybe someone will refer them over and make the sale for you.

  • Maybe you'll be the best deal in town and leave them no choice to choose anyone else.

Whatever your route may be, realize that people don't want to be marketed to. They want a deeper connection with why you're doing what you do, and they want to trust you. Once that is accomplished, then you're on to something.
