So much Useless Marketing Advice. HELP! (rant) entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I run several online businesses, but have found myself quite frustrated lately. I've gone so far as to even take a course on online marketing, to read dozens of articles devoted to marketing, and absorbed countless hours of videos and podcasts regarding online marketing.

I find it all falls into one of two completely useless and out-of-touch categories.

The first type of useless advice takes the approach of just telling you to make better content. Write better. Make better videos. Post more often. Etc. etc. etc.

This advice is beyond useless if you don't have an audience. If I, for example, spent 400 hours writing an ebook that never sells a single copy, how does the content of the book and its quality possibly matter at all? People aren't reading the work, deciding it is inferior, and then passing on it. They just aren't reading it in the first place, while I've seen objectively inferior stuff flourishing. There is obviously some secret sauce to these posts going viral. Quality may be a necessary aspect of success, but it is in no way sufficient.

I see this advice all the time even on this subreddit. It can be boiled down to "Step one) Post awesome stuff on the internet, Step two) get a million views. Step three) Profit."

If you spent 20 hours on a post, and it gets three hits in a week, I don't think "Writing better" is any kind of solution. It can actually be quite infuriating.

"If you build it, they will come" I hear over and over again. It isn't even remotely true. So what gives? Can someone possibly fill me in on what I'm missing here?

Which leads me to the second type of useless advice, the marketing "guru" who just assumes you have 10k people already listening to what you say, already visiting your site, already signed up to your email list etc. etc. etc.

In the course I took the guy went like two hours into how you need to have some kind of a teaser PDF or something on your website in order to get people to enter their email address. He went on and on about this in multiple videos, completely just assuming that the person he is teaching has people visiting his site every day by the thousands, and that all he needed to do was convince them to give up an email address. Still other marketers just claim that all you need to do is "post to your facebook" followers. As if you just automatically have hundreds of people on facebook listening to your every word and giving a shit.

No, I can't "send out a survey to determine what product people want to buy". What makes you think I have anyone to send a survey to? If I can't even get people to read a free blog post, what makes you think they are going to give up their time to fill out some survey?

So what is it that I am missing here, and more importantly WHY does everyone seem to gloss over this part. This seems like, I don't know, the absolute most important part.

Sorry for the epic rant, but can someone please give me some advice?
