Interesting Scenario Discovered ON Backlinks earn by blogging adsense income

I have a client who competes in a major city area for vacation rentals.

One of my competitors has started to dominate the serps starting in May 2017 The upward curve on the graph was obvious. I went and dig some digging through Ahrefs to see if anything was going on.

Our sites, we have checked everything, webmaster tools, sem rush. etc.

The specific competitor bought links between 2011-2015. I checked ahrefs and ahrefs is now showing , Google is picking up these paid links between September and October of this year.

YOu can tell they are spondored links, because ahrefs is showing me the links are nothing but "mom bloggers"

Anyone else run into this lately? Google picking up links from 2011-2015 and boosting your websites presence?
