The Youtube Middle Class (What Nobody Tells You) entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

In Dec 2016, I quit my day job and started a Youtube channel. I was sick of the corporate world and it sounded very appealing to create videos around your passion. (Also felt great to work the right-side of the brain, after 5 years of numbless PowerPointing/Excel)

Before I started, I made the naiive assumption that many of the large Youtubers I followed were making a full-time income based off their weekly videos. It certainly seemed so (at the time) based on the lifestyle they portrayed

I thought that if I could match the content quality of some of these Youtubers, I could also start to make a reliable income on Youtube. (Boy was I wrong!) After 8 months of full-time Youtubing, I got my first Youtube paycheck of a whoppping.... $100! Hard to call it pocket change - more like pocket lint given 8 months of vested hours.

On the side, I started to interview (lesser-known) fast-growing Youtubers to see what they were doing different. After many interviews, I realized that the vast majority of content creators on Youtube (channels with <500K subscribers, what I call the Youtube Middle Class) are not able to live solely off their Youtube earnings. Most Youtubers are supplementing their earnings with personal savings, freelance work, affiliate marketing and other side businesses like merch. But very few actually talk about this business side in their videos.

If you are interested in starting a Youtube career, think about potential freelance work that could supplement (the slow and frustrating) Youtube AdSense Revenue for 2 years. No matter how good your content is (unless you are simply brilliant), it will take >2 years before your channel builds critical mass.
