Almost 2 weeks ago I made this post, and it is already time to provide an update!
So I have found myself in a position to where a CEO of the biggest tech investment firm in my area has agreed to meet to hear my pitch on my business after having his number 2 and 3 guys urge him to do so after they met with me. Great! Thankfully I'll have some time as his schedule is super busy, but for a double STEM major that is also president of my school's ACM....well this will surely be a test of my character haha.
However, I do have some possible legal questions. So this business idea is one I have been working on for over a year. This past summer, I took a course at a university in a different country that was entrepreneurship focused. The final project was a group project, and my group decided to use my business idea for the project. The group definitely took it in a slightly different direction than I'd like, mostly in part because we were supposed to present this business as if we had performed market research as well as had other figures to present. Basically we presented a different business model with fictional numbers for a 2 week course. No legal filings were ever made, no domain names were ever purchased, the only thing that was done was a few power points. This business revolves around an app that I am the sole person that has been working on the development of, I did not start until after the trip, and I have not used any input or ideas that were cultivated in the trip.
I was asked to try and clarify any legal hold ups with if the class would have any ownership of the company, or if the others in the group might. Again this is a business idea that I thought of on my own, I have not taken any ideas that were not mine for the business model (that weren't there before), and there has been no contact or discussion of the business since then. I don't even have access to the information that we did discuss on the business. The only thing that remains similar is my core idea of what the app/business does in one sentence. Is this something I should check and see with the individuals of my group project to make sure they are okay with? Do I ask them to send me an email declaring that the business I am currently working on is solely my idea that they have no ownership on? I have been working very hard to make what time I have for this business, while the other group members just coasted with my idea for the 2 week project/course. I would absolutely hate to get further in the process only to deal with a hang-up like that. Please give what advice you can. Also keep in mind I am a 21 year old college student.
