What are the best ways to get free press for an idea that has viral potential? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

When you have a business (or marketing idea) that has viral potential, how do you go about making that initial push to get press coverage?

My personal project is a basic income giveaway (of $500/mo for two years) as a way to launch a new money blog focused on helping Americans become financially healthy. I've shared it on a few sweepstakes/giveaways sites and have had 5,000+ subscribers over the last two weeks. Although this is great, it doesn't seem to have much visibility outside of the giveaway world.

What recommendations do you have for connecting with the media, establishing a base of supporters, etc., that's needed to make an idea go viral? Any experiences or tips would be appreciated! Thanks.
