What is SEO and why does it seem nobody knows. earn by blogging adsense income

II got the unlucky job of figuring out what SEO is. It's like it's a giant mystery what SEO is, Nobody can give a distinct answer. I work as a programmer, i can figure out php, mysql, html, all of the programing mumbo jumbo but SEO is just a mystery to everybody except all the people who sell the service. Not even facebook can keep the lamp stack a secret, How can nobody give me a distinct answer what SEO is? I've asked everyone in the office (20+ people working here including me) and when i ask people what it is their face turns white like im talking to a ghost and they just nod their head and say "uhhhhh, seo? that's the search stuff dude, should be simple to figure it out, just google it :) :) :) :) :) :)"
