Hi Redditors!
A friend of mine launched a small web development agency. He and his small team are very good in creating web apps in Ruby on Rails. They started to search for clients on Upwork and they had a feeling that there are lot of remote projects with good money but in the reality they struggled because there are not much Ruby on Rails proejcts and there is a strong competition even if you are very good. And also, some things are actually in more demand than others. I suggested that maybe they need to switch to Javascript development, they were also thinking of iOS development but then I thought: it is always better to have some data to rely on!
So I've decided to do a little research on Upwork. The methodology is simple: I've made searches using keywords, saved all numbers into spreadsheet, made some sorting and then some charts.
Disclaimer: I'm just sharing my findings and they should not be considered as advice, as a data for any decision but rather as a source for discussion. I'm not responsible for any consequences and not responsible for any actions you may take based on this incomplete data. Also a disclosure: I'm not affiliated on Upwork and not making any profits if you will sign up with them or with any freelance marketplace. Upwor was selected purely because it is the largest freelance marketplace.
SO, here are my findings for today, February 26 2018:
- Total projects open: 103,366
- # of projects marked as up to $100 budget: 21,326 or 79.37% of total open projecs with a budget defined.
- # of projects marked as up $5k+ budget: 1,636
- Total estimated value of all projects with a budget defined: $9,246,300*
I've used 41 keywords where each keyword represents a technology, profession, product or platform.
For each keyword I've extracted: - # of projects open (with and without budget defined) - # of projects open with budget less than $100 - # of projects open with budget $5,000 or more
- The first question: where are the money?
Here is the top 10 by total projects value*:
- developer $4,961,700
- designer $3,579,950
- design $3,579,800
- website $2,522,850
- manager $1,601,300
- javascript $1,592,900
- marketing $1,504,600
- android $1,264,600
- php $1,182,450
- iphone $924,600
- Next question: where customers are more willing to pay more?
Top 10 by % of $5k+ budget projects:
- translate 32.05%
- writer 30.22%
- pdf 27.91%
- banner 26.48%
- music 23.69%
- design 22.07%
- designer 22.06%
- video 19.88%
- amazon 17.45%
- website 17.45%
- Next question: where clients don't have large budgets?
Bottom 10 by % of up to $5k+ budget projects
- data entry 0.90%
- blockchain 6.33%
- node.sj 6.75%
- rails 7.55%
- web app 8.07%
- crypto 8.59%
- manager 8.78%
- adwords 9.22%
- database 10.41%
- VR 10.49%
And here are the charts I've build:
Interesting findings:
- The highest % of $5k+ budget projects is in translate: 32.05%
- The lowest % of $5k+ budget projects is in data entry: 0.90%
- Top 5 by % of all jobs: designer, design, developer, website, marketing. They also have 11% to 22% of $5k+ budget projects.
- There are almost x2 times more projects for android than for iphone.
- And there are x2 times more projects related to php than android
- There are almost x4 times more projects related to facebook than to adwords
-
And unfortunately (for my friend) there are x12 times less projects for rails (ruby on Rails) than for php or javascript
-
calculation included only projects with a budget defined. Also it assumed that value of a project with a budget up to $100 is $50 and every project with $5k+ budget is valued at $5,000.
P.S.: Shameless plug: I'm working on the startup unpaid.io - the online tool to help freelancers to manage unpaid invoices, send reminders, see their cashflow etc. and feedback, advice, suggestion is appreciated. PM is always welcome!
