Does anyone have an idea about how Google et al. handles these?
It's common practice in most publications standards to make abbreviations like so: search engine optimization (SEO) is great. And following this, I'd primarily be using the term SEO. Now, this is a bad example, because people actually use the abbreviation as a search term more than what it stands for, but you get the picture.
So, obviously, Google knows what SEO is, in case someone actually writes out the entire string, but what about a term like SSG (static site generator). Is it good enough to simply use abbreviation syntax mentioned, will Google grab the meaning out of its context or will it weight the most common interpretation of the abbreviation based on trending search strings?
Obviously, there's not one right answer and Google likely uses multifaceted algorithmes to make sense of content. I know, no ones actually knows, but I am still curious to hear your thoughts and experiences on the matter.
Obviously, this is mostly relevant to long-form content, but what are your experiences with assigning and using abbreviations this way? Has anything official been stated by Google on the matter?
I was thinking about running an experiment myself with running several similar pieces with heavy abbreviation use and without, but I have yet to be write any success pieces, so I am hoping someone else has done observations / experiments? :)
