TL;DR There are three ways to get your content shared: teach, shock, or entertain. Figure out the one that comes most naturally to you, and try to be great at it.

Picking a marketing strategy I always knew that blogging and original content was going to be a cornerstone of my marketing approach with UserMuse. I'd been blogging for a while and had good publisher relationships for syndicating my content. Plus I like writing. It was a good fit. If there's any creative outlet or community you can tap into easily with your existing skills, you should do that.

Aligning your strategy with your personality I have a dry sense of humor, as do most of my friends. Carrying out a concept to an absurd extreme makes me laugh. If you've seen the middle-out epiphany scene in Silicon Valley, stuff like that. My team at work is like a less-funny, less-telegenic version of the Piper team. And I mean that as a compliment.

So while ~95% of the time I spend on marketing is on Facebook, Quora, AdWords, our blog, and writing for other zines, I spend the other ~5% experimenting with content and PR stunts that are bonuses if they work.

For instance, we gave our entire ad budget for a day to a single woman, who joined UserMuse. Then we blogged about cracking the code for 100% conversion rate.

We then evaluated TV ad time in Wyoming during Jerry Springer and created probably the worst TV ad ever made, which we then put on YouTube.

Last week, we announced a farcical subscription box with nothing in it. We did make the box though and are giving it to the best e-mail request for it.

We haven't gone viral, but the ads have brought in traffic that's converted at a high rate and it's helped us reach a different group of people.

And to my disbelief, an investor I'd been talking to emailed me after he saw the first post on Medium to say he "loved the guerrilla marketing campaign" and asked if we were open to a small investment from him.

People respond to authenticity in interesting ways.
